Congratulations must go to Jack Bates and Kieran Charles who were recently selected to play for the Swansea County team.
The team was picked from players from Swansea Schoolboys and Llwchwr Schoolboys.
Jack and Kieran represented the County and defeated Bridgend and Swansea Valley but lost to Dyfed.
These games were also West Wales squad trials but unfortunately both were not selected.

However, to be considered to be in the best 22 players in the county and to attend these trials is a massive achievement which deserves a mention and a big pat on the back.

Under 11's V Morriston 18/04/10

Having played yesterday and with several players going on a school trip, we knew our numbers would be low for today's visit from Morriston, who arguably, were our hardest opposition this season.
Having been to west Wales trials this week with Jack and Kieran, the boys knew at least 5 players from Morriston who were at the same trial, hence we knew we would have to perform today.
Again., we started slowly and Morriston opened the scoring with their flying winger getting past us out wide to run a good try. This was converted. We started to play and came close a couple of times through Cameron Barker and Ethan Smith on the wings. Unfortunately, Morriston produced some good work from their backs, who broke through our defensive line to score another try which was converted.

Half time:

South Gower 0 - Morriston 14

We started the second half superbly when Callum and Ethan pressured the catcher after we kicked off. Callum managed to rip the ball free and made for the line. He was stopped 5 metres out and our forwards got their to win the ruck. When the ball came out, Ethan looked blind then darted open to score a good try which Kieran converted.
From the restart we kept up the pressure on Morriston getting close to their line. Jack Bates peeled off the maul with 2 metres to go but put his head down instead of releasing Kieran only to be stopped. Morriston cleared their lines.
We attacked again and some good hands put Callum clear. He looked certain to go in at the corner but decided to cut back into contact a metre from the line to get tackled and knock on over the line. Morriston came back at us but some excellent defence from the team repelled them.
With 5 minutes left we had a penalty in our 22. Kieran lined up to kick to touch when it was noticed that Morriston were dropping deep to collect the clearing kick. Noticing this, Kieran was instructed to tap and release Callum. Cal received the ball in his own 22 before running wide and cutting back in by the opposing 10 metre line, Cal stepped several tackles before galloping clear for an outstanding individual try. Kieran converted.
From the kick off we were turned over but managed to bundle the opposition into touch. From the lineout we cleared our lines into touch and the final whistle went to end a superb committed game of rugby from both sides.

This was another outstanding game from the boys who played. The commitment was clear to be seen and the boys worked for each other to register a good result against a team who have not lost this season ! We had our chances to win it when we got over their line once only to be denied a try and a massive overlap to score but the boys were brilliant.

Players to mention:

Ethan Smith: Again Ethan impresses at this age level. Solid in defence with an eye for a gap. Scored a good try and had a superb game.

Callum Carson: An outstanding game from Cal this week. His defence was faultless and it was nice to see the ball in 2 hands ! His try was simply fantastic !!!

Jack Bates: Put himself about tackling everything, making the hard yards and picking up the knocks to go with it. Another great game.

Paul Jones: Brilliant again. So strong and powerful in the tight, Paul won several opposition lineouts and made lots of ground with the opposition on his back ! Great game Paul !

Kieran Charles: Had a few points to prove today and he certainly proved them ! His distribution was spot on and his tackling was ferocious. Fantastic game from Charlo !

Next week we have the Gower Cup at Penclawdd where we really do need to start playing from the final whistle !!
Training Wednesday as normal 18.30hrs. Thanks to all who played this weekend, i am very proud of you all.

Under 11's V Old Bristolians 17/04/10

A beautiful morning saw us welcome Old Bristolians down on tour. We played 12 aside with a number 8 and an extra centre to accommodate the large team the touring side brought down.
Again we started poorly and were not switched on from the off. Old Bristolians scored within the first minutes as we knocked on the kick off and got turned over. Some poor tackling and the opposition registered their first try which was converted. We came back into the game and from a maul on the opposition 22, Paul Jones went on a rampage and powered his way over for a good strong try. Kieran Charles converted. The game was tight and defences were good for the whole game as both sides struggled to break one another down.

Half time:

South Gower 7 - Old Bristolians 7

We came out in the second half with more passion and belief. We got better at the breakdown area and won several turnovers through counter rucking. When we gained a penalty on the opposing 10 yard line, quick thinking by Moggy releasing Kieran who released his backline for Ethan Smith to dart over in the corner.Kieran converted.
Old Bristolians came back at us and through our inability to seal off the sides of the ruck area, the opposition picked up and went through the middle to score a good try. Unfortunately for Old Bristolians, the conversion was missed.
We continued to pressure the opposition and when Harry Silvey drove over in the middle of a maul, the try was disallowed and we were awarded a scrum 5 metres out, we knocked on during the following phase and the whistle for full time was blown

A very competitive match provided the platform for an outstanding game to watch. Some of the play was very good but we need to start playing from the off and not after 5 minutes.

Players to mention:

Kieran Charles: Massive game from Charlo today as he dictated play in the backline and made some crunching tackles. Great game.

Callum Carson: Callums' direct running proved to be a constant threat all game, his defence was spot on as he played a superb all round game. Awesome Cal !

Jack Bates: Jack was everywhere today, taking it on when it needed to be straightened up and passing when the option outside was the right one. Well done Batesy.

Paul Jones: This kid is a monster ! Paul led from the front and did the right things in the tight to have a massive impact on the game. His season seems to be getting better and better. Awesome Paul !

Harry Silvey: Harry was awesome in the tight. His tackling is technically second to none. His performance today showed how much he keeps improving. Well done Silv !

Tom Mogridge: I thought Toms' delivery from scrum half today was much better. To go with his usual in your face energetic display that Tom always displays he had a cracking game, Well done Mogmeister General !

Ospreys ID Festival - Bridgend - 11/04/10

At Bridgend, we had 17 players for 4 games at 10 minutes a half. Every player was guaranteed at least 2 games.

1st game:

South Gower 1 - Ystragynlais 1

Try: Tom Mogridge

We seem to have a problem lately with switching on at the start of games. This game was poor. With so many handling errors and basic errors we made a meal of this game. We went a try down through atrocious tackling but luckily, Tom Mogridge went blind off a scrum to score one back. We were camped on the opposition line for the last few minutes but our lack of basic skills cost us as the game finished 1-1.

2nd game:

South Gower 3 - Maesteg Welsh 2

Tries: Tom Mogridge, Paul Jones, Ethan Smith

We performed better in this game with a change of 8 personnel. It was a tight match with Moggy scoring first after one of his trademark "i am slippery as a fish" runs to score a good try.
Paul was next to score with a powerful run to make the score 2-2 with minutes left. Finally, after good work by the forwards, the ball went blind from the breakdown and Ethan Smith threw a great sidestep to score the winner in the corner. A much improved performance.

3rd game:

South Gower 3 - Loughor 0

Tries: Ethan Smith, Cameron Barker, Callum Carson.

We performed much better this game and didn't give the opposition a look in all game. Ethan opened the scoring with a great run through the middle of the opposing defence. Next was a great try as we hit up the middle setting up good ruck ball before the ball went through the hands blind to release Cameron Barker to score. Callum Carson rounded off the scoring with a great effort spinning out of tackles and registering another good try.

4th game:

South gower 2 - Porthcawl 0

Tries: Michael Jones, Kieran Charles.

Another great performance as we finished the festival strong. Michael Jones scored a wonderful individual try weaving in and out of everyone to score brilliantly in the corner. Next up saw Callum Carson make the midfield break but as he was tackled he offloaded superbly to Kieran Charles who was motoring through to score a great try. Our discipline was superb in this game as we must have had 15 plus penalties in our favour but we produced good rugby in attack and defence.

Fall Bay 7 - South Gower 28

Away at Fall Bay with 15 players, we started well. The first try, we passed well throughout the backs and Paul Jones supported and drove over the line for his first try. Jack Bates converted.
Next up was Moggy, we won our scrum and Moggy went blind weaving his way though players before scoring a good try. Jack converted.
Just before half time, our forwards secured good turnover ball and our backs did the rest with Callum Carson going over for a good try. George Heard converted.

Half time:

Fall Bay 0 - South Gower 21

The second half was a lot tighter with Fall bay using several under 10's players who had come off at half time from their match. They were good under 10's players !
Paul Jones won an opposing lineout and drove over the line with the opposition camping on his back ! Jack converted.
Fall bay hit back with a well taken try which was converted.

Penclawdd were short of players so we lent them 3 of our players each half.
We started well when Ethan Smith had a good run before being tackled and offloading to the supporting Paul Jones who went over for his first try which Callum Carson converted.
Next up was a Penclawdd scrum which George Grammenos won against the head and Ethan at scrum half went blind and scored a good try which again was converted by Callum.
Next was a great team try. The forwards to the maul rolling forward before we went all hands and put Luke Davies over in the corner. Callum converted.
Penclawdd then had possession before Callum in the centre ripped the ball free and turned it over. Cal made the hard yards and offloaded to Owen Renowden to score. Callum converted.

Half Time:

South Gower 28 - Penclawdd 0

The second half we gave Penclawdd Paul, Owen and Cameron, and both Owen and Paul crossed for good tries against their own team ! which were converted.
Our next try was when Ethan took the ball into contact and Jack Bates came in to rip it free and pass out to Callum who drifted in for his try. George Heard converted.
Next up was another team try with good rucking by the forwards. Jack, who was playing scrum half this half passed to Ethan at stand off and he put it through the hands to send Tom Jenkins in at the corner. George converted.
Lastly, our forwards rucked and picked up and drove and the second ruck, Jack released his backline to utilise the overlap and Tom Jenkins went in for another try. George converted.

Under 11's V Mumbles 14/03/10

We played 15 aside against Mumbles at Bishopston Comp on a full size pitch. This was our second 15 aside game but our first on the proper sized pitch and we only had 1 training session at 15 aside which was Tuesday.
We had 17 players turn up with a few away and one injured. The conditions were perfect and the game was a fantastic match for the neutral. All players were committed and showed excellent ball skills and knowledge which is a massive plus as we look to play this week in week out next season.
We played the first half slightly downhill and pressured Mumbles from the off. With Dylan John taking the first kick off well and charging into contact. The first half, we were camped in Mumbles' half, due to the wind and slope but also due to our pressure we put on them. The first try came from a ruck metres out from the Mumbles line. Good rucking from our forwards, we kept the momentum going by picking up and driving. Jack drove close, the pack rucked and Moggy went blind to score in the corner. Jack Bates converted.
Again from the restart we played the rugby in the right half of the pitch. We were putting pressure on Mumbles again when we had an injury. We were due to restart with a scrum on their 22 but the half time whistle was blown.

Half time:

South Gower 7 - Mumbles 0

We knew we would have to up our game in the second half as we were against the wind and slightly uphill. We started well but Mumbles started to come back into the game. Their forwards were very well drilled in the breakdown rucking us off their ball. Their break came when a Mumbles' player broke through from his 22 and was tackled by the half way line. Their support was instant and the supporting player picked up and went through the middle to score from the half way.
We lifted our heads and played the rest of the game in their half. We got lucky when Mumbles intercepted in the midfield and i thought they were through but good cover tackling from our full back Cameron Barker stopped their attack. With the last play of the game, Paul broke blind and offloaded to his brother Michael, who set up the ruck. Sam Jones was there first and picked up and fed Jack. Jack made a run and offloaded to Moggy and Tom jinked in and out working his way across the pitch and executed a perfect pass to Callum to dive in at the corner for the winning try which Jack Bates converted. The final whistle went and the boys got a thoroughly deserved win.

South Gower 14 - Mumbles 7.

As i mentioned, we have only had 1 training session for this and the boys were superb. Their discipline was excellent in defence and we kept our shape throughout the game. I thought Sam Jones had an excellent game, Harry Silvey was superb in his tackling and Ethan directed his backs very well. Also, Max Collis didn't miss any tackles which was pleasing along with Michael Jones. Overall this was an excellent fully committed performance from our team.
I thought Mumbles were superb in what they did, especially in the forwards where their work at the breakdown was good.
If this is what these teams can produce at this game this season, then there will be some great rugby to be seen next season. Well done to Mumbles, i thought they played very very well.

Players to mention:

Tom Mogridge: Tom was outstanding today. He delivery was excellent as well as his workrate. He was everywhere tackling and rucking where needed, scored the first and set up the second. Excellent Moggy !!!

Paul Jones: This man continues to put in the performances that Wales are after. Fully committed, everywhere on the pitch, strong as an ox and ball skills of a back. Another superb game from Paul !!!

Jack Bates: Outstanding. Excelled at openside pressuring Mumbles and made several telling runs which gained good ground. Fantastic Jacko !!!

Owen Renowden: A great performance from Owen. His work didn't go unnoticed in the tight and his ball handling was great passing when he should to release our backs. Brilliant Owen !!!

Callum Carson: Superb tackling and superb running. Very hard to bring down and popped up for the winner. Well done Cal !!!

Ethan Smith: Ethan was captain today as he directs his teammates all the time. His organisation of the backline was vital to our defence today. Playing a year up as he does and in such a vital position as outside half, i thought he did a sterling job. Well done Smithy !!!

Overall, fantastic. Thoroughly deserved for the commitment the boys showed. I am very proud of all who played today. Lets use the game to spur us onwards and upwards.

Finally, i would like to congratulate Kieran Charles and Jack Bates who have been selected to train with the County squad after some great performances with Llwchwr district. Well done boys.

Under 11's V Pontarddulais 7/03/10

A beautiful morning at Pontarddulais saw us turn up with 16 players. 10 of them being forwards, so again it was a full change of forwards at half time.
We started very well and put some good pressure on Pontarddulais with Paul Jones leading the pack onwards.
The 1st try of the game though came from Tom Mogridge. After several phases we got to the half way line and as Moggy was about to pass out, he realised Pontarddulais had more backs than ours and went blind. He raced clear only to be caught up but then stepped his way past 3 more tackles to score in the corner. Kieran converted.
Pontarddulais replied and put us under good pressure but we soaked it up and defended well. Some good work from our forwards in support got us going and Moggy powered his way up the field to within 10 metres of the opposition line. Paul Jones supported him and released to Callum Carson whio burst through tackles to score our 2nd try. Kieran converted.
Again Pontarddulais cam back at us and this time their pressure was too much. Moggy made a great tackle in the corner and we were there in numbers but we just stared at the ball. Doing this allowed their player to pick up and drive over the line.

Half time:

Pontarddulais 7 - South Gower 14

A complete change of our pack and both wings disrupted our momentum but all credit to Pontarddulais they put us under pressure. Poor rucking and poor tackling gifted the opposition their 2nd try of the game.
It seemed today that every time there was a ruck and we lost it they had massive overlaps in their backline which they used perfectly and scored another try. We then upped our game and put pressure on Pontarddulais but when we had a try disallowed for a knock on it took the wind out of our sails a bit. Pontarddulais finished with a breakaway try for their winger to finish the game. If it hadn't of been for Tom Mogridge and Kieran Charles' tackles on their winger today, the score could have been even more.

Pontarddulais 28 - South Gower 14

A game that was there for the taking. Don't get me wrong, Pontarddulais were good today and put us under lots of pressure especially in the forwards. I feel, we lost momentum at half time with all the changes and didn't compete as well as we can at the breakdown. On the upside, some of our play was good but we need to really take our chances when we get given them. Thanks to Pontarddulais who played very well and for providing a lovely atmosphere to play in which is all too rare these days.

Players to Mention:

Paul Jones: Seems to be getting mentioned every week. Another powerful performance, Paul is improving all the time.

Tom Mogridge: Excellent all round game from Moggy today. His running was superb and his tackling was even better. Needs to pass more sometimes from the ruck and get his head up first to see how the game is laid out. However, Tom had a cracker.

Ieaun Hulme: I thought Ieaun performed very well today. He did what was asked of him, he made his tackles and ran and passed well.

Sam Jones: Best game i have seen from Sam in the forwards. Got to every ruck and maul and came out a few times with it.

We have Mumbles at home Sunday. I would like to see everyone training Wednesday as we may play 15 aside.

Under 11's V Gowerton 28/02/10

After having only 12 players turn up for the last 4 weeks we had 19 today and Gowerton would only play 10 aside which left everyone only having half a game.
We played 3 thirds and we started well putting pressure on Gowerton. We registered our first try of the game after some goood mauling from our forwards. We worked the ball to the back of the maul and George Heard made the break to score the try. Kieran stepped up to convert.
Today was Kierans first proper game against his old club and the Gowerton team were superb in their tackling of him. Kieran noticed this and did well to release his backs outside him every time which inturn allowed Callum to weave his way through some loose tackling to score our second try. Kieran converted.
Next up, we had a scrum on Gowertons' 22m line and Kieran went blind and smashed his was through some tackles to dive for the line and score our third try. He picked himself up and converted. The last try of the game was well worked as Kieran did a dummy scissors with Cal, drew his man and released Luke Davies to sprint free into the corner. Again, Kieran converted.

South Gower 28 - Gowerton 0

For the first time in a while today, our forwards were being out rucked. Gowertons rucking game was good and we could never guarantee our own ball. When we did have it though, our back did well scoring several tries. With 19 players and a complete change of team, momentum was always going to be hard to maintain and we took our foot of the gas a couple of times. We need to be more clinical and our forwards need to up their tight game as other teams around us are improving quickly.

Thanks to all who turned up. It is nice to be in a position where we have some many players as the change to 15 aside next season is soon and we need the numbers every week what we had today.

Players to mention:

Kieran Charles: Big game for him today and he came out of it with a well taken try. His hands were good and his tackling was spot on. Well done Charlo.

George Heard: George did well around the field and took his try very well. A good all round game from George.

Paul Jones: Massive presence in the pack, showed again today in the first half as he drove his pack forwards.

Dylan John: Dylan had his best game for a while today. Its as if he needs to be told how big he actually his for him to use his size. He did today and had a good game.

Under 11's V Swansea Uplands 21/02/10

South Gower 7 - Swansea Uplands 14

Uplands had 15 players and we had 16 so i reluctantly agreed to play 15 aside. I say reluctantly, as we have never trained at 15 aside and it did make a difference.
The game was pretty much even all the way through but unfortunately we made too many wrong decisions and silly knock ons and missed tackles which gave Uplands the win.
We started well and after good rucking by our forwards, they presented clean ball to our backs on the 2nd phase. Kieran passed to Callum who threw a dummy and scored a good try. Kieran converted.
With the last play of the half, an Uplands player went through 4 missed tackles to score and convert and end the half at 7-7.

Half time:

South Gower 7 - Swansea Uplands 7

Second half started and it was nip and tuck most of the way. Again, we were hampered by silly errors that had crept into our game and at times panicked with possession. Too be fair to Uplands, they put us under pressure and we never really got our game going. Uplands open sided had a great game and put Kieran under enormous pressure every scrum. To be fair to Kieran, he passed before tackled most of the time but our delivery needs to be quicker and we need to be more streetwise in delaying their pressure. Again, with the last play of the half, the Uplands ran through their backs and bumped off 3 of our tackles to offload and score in the corner. They converted. End of game.

To be fair on our kids, i wont be agreeing to another 15 aside game until we start training them on how to play it positionally, which due to the lack of space illuminated on training nights, won't be happening until the clocks go forward. Our main points to take and learn from the game will be to be more aggressive in the rucks, not to panic when in possession and for our backline to defend as one and not leave dog legs which we did too often today.
We were rucked of our own ball far too many times today and some of the passing decisions were wrong which only put our backline under more pressure. Also, we need to cut out the silly knock ons which ruined our game today.
On a lighter note, some of the play was good, some of the passing and support was good and for our first outing at 15 aside with no training at all, then i am proud as a coach for the effort everyone put in. Well done boys.
Training Wednesday, everyone, that means everyone to turn up please as we look forward to playing Gowerton at home Sunday at 10 aside rugby !

Under 11's V Loughor 14/02/10

What a beautiful morning at South Gower. The playing conditions were perfect, but out of a squad of 21, we only had 11 players. Again this week, Tom Jenkins (who produced another outstanding performance) made the step up to the 11's and excelled again. If only his dad didn't coach the 10's !!!

We started badly ! We knocked on from the kick off and Loughor took us along the pitch, recycled the ball and some poor attempts to tackle saw Loughor glide through us straight away to score the first try of the day. We regrouped, woke up and dominated from there on in. Some good work from our backs created a maul 5 metres out from Loughor's try line. Paul Jones peeled of the back down the blind side, drew his man and put Cameron Barker in for his first try of the day. Kieran Charles converted.
Next we had a scrum in the middle of the pitch as the loughor restart didn't go 10. Kieran lined his backs up and called rocket ball. Kieran went blind, fed Tom Jenkins who in turn passed to the looping Tom Mogridge and Moggy darted over in the corner for an excellent set piece move. Kieran converted.
Next up, our forwards created lovely secure ball for Moggy. He fed the backs who made the ground and Moggy supported first to receive the ball and run over for his second of the game. Again, Charlo converted.
Next up was another good try. Again, a solid platform was created by our forwards. Mogman fed Charlo, who fed Callum. Callum made the break and got ankle tapped a metre from the line. He had the sense then to offload to Cameron who went over in the corner for a well taken, unselfish, team try. Unfortunately, Cal got injured in that play and was replaced by Michael Jones. Kieran converted and the ref blew for half time.

South Gower 28 - Loughor 7

The second half started and we carried on where we left off. A scrum on Loughor's 10 yard line gave us secure ball from which to attack from. Kieran called scotland one dummy, Cameron came on the dummy switch and Kieran carried on through the gap. He drew the winger perfectly and passed to Tom Jenkins who sprinted over from 20 metres out to score an excellent try. Again, Charlo converted.
Next up was Jack Bates. Moggy made a break into the opposition 22 and got caught in a maul. Good communication from the team and the ball worked its way back to Jack who broke a few tackles and stretched over for another try. Kieran converted.
Next up we were lucky enough to witness the Barker step. Not seen every week, but when it is, it is beautiful ! Scrappy ball was won by our forwards and then released to our backs. Kieran fed Cameron and he cut inside, displayed his famous step on two Loughor players and went half the length of the pitch to score a cracking try ! Kieran converted.
Last but not least, we turned over Loughor and fed the ball along the backline. The defence was staggered and Michael Jones picked his way through for a lovely run from the half way to score a great try. This time Kieran hit the crossbar ! Unlucky mate !

As i mentioned earlier, we only had 11 players plus Tom Jenkins. We lost Callum halfway through the first half and were down to the bare bones, but what a great set of bare bones we have. After an early wake up call we stepped up to the plate and dominated with our backs tearing the opposition apart. This, obviously could only be done with the help and of secure ball from our forwards. Unfortunately, George Grammenos was asked to leave the pitch by the referee. I feel George was hard done by as he had played an exceptional game. Overall, very impressed and very proud to put in a performance like that against a strong Loughor outfit. Keep it going boys, your teamwork is superb !

Players to Mention.

Cameron Barker: A hatrick of tries and the awesome Barker step summed up Cam's game. Ran well, passed well, tackled well and supported well. Excellent game !

Paul Jones: The man mountain of our pack was dominant. Turned over several rucks and mauls and even passed like Stephen Jones to set up Cam's first try. Another excellent game Paul !

Tom Mogridge: Moggy's distribution from scrum half was much better this week. Tom was first to tackle everything and the first to support which resulted in his two tries. A superb performance from the Mogmeister General this week !

Kieran Charles: Ran the game from 10. Some big tackles and some great vision throughout the game ensured Kieran commanded his back line perfectly. Great play to set up Tom Jenkins' try.

Harry Silvey: Our smallest player, our best tackler. In Loughors' faces all game putting player into the turf ! Superb Game Silv !

George Grammenos: Was harshly sent off but up until then was superb. Won a couple of balls against the head and got involved at every breakdown. Head up Georgie G, you were great !!!

Even though it is half term we will still be training this Wednesday at 18.30 hrs. We have Swansea Uplands at home next Sunday which we know will be very tough. See you all Wednesday and a massive well done boys !!!

South Gower travelled to Tumble with a squad decimated through illness and injury. We took 12 players out of our 22 registered. We did not have enough backs in our squad and therefore asked Tom Jenkins from our under 10's to make the step up for this game. The pitch was really muddy and it was very cold.
The game itself was really scrappy with a lot of dodgy passes and silly knock ons. However, South Gower were applying pressure all the time. After a lovely run from Luke Davies, we were awarded a penalty 10 metres from Tumbles line. The set penalty was taken and Jack Bates took the ball on the switch to be tackled a few metres from the line. Jack offloaded in the tackle to a rampaging Paul Jones who went over in the corner for his first try of the game. Kieran Charles stepped up and nailed the conversion.

Half Time:

Tumble 0 - South Gower 7

We came into the game more in the second half and started well. Tom Jenkins had a lovely run down the wing and was tackled well into touch 10 metres out. From the lineout, Paul Jones won the ball and went straight for the corner where he registered his second try of the game. Kieran converted.
Our forwards were really performing this week and good work turned tumble over. Moggy fed Kieran who dummied one and offloaded to Cameron in the centre. Cam stepped 3 or 4 players and went over for a very well taken try. Kieran converted.
Again our defence was spot on and never let Tumble close to our line. We had a scrum 20 metres out. Moggy fed Kieran who again, dummied one and ghosted through the defence to register a good try. Kieran himself converted. The referee then blew for full time.

Final Score: Tumble 0 - South Gower 28

Overall, a good performance. Not like the Dunvant game, but as one of the spectators said, we would be hard pushed to see that every week as they performed so well against Dunvant. However, i was very please with the domination from our forwards constantly turning over ball and winning lineouts and scrums against the head. Also our tackling was very good.

Players to mention :

Tom Jenkins: Tom (under 10's) stepped in on the wing to help us out and was solid. His defence was superb and his running was excellent. A really impressive game from Tom. Man of the match !

Paul Jones: A monster in the pack. Hasn't played for a few weeks but you can tell when he is on the pitch. great mauler, rucker and brings much needed aggression to our forwards. Took his 2 tries superbly. Awesome Paul !

George Grammenos: George won several balls against the head, tackled superbly did his job well. Well done George !

Also, may thanks to George Heard, Dylan John, George Grammenos who played for Tumble at different parts of the game to help them through injuries and with numbers. George Heard had a very good game against us !!!

Training Wednesday please for everyone who can make it. We have Loughor at home Sunday who are strong and have a large squad so there may be a possibility of 2 games. Thanks to all who travelled the long journey to Tumble. Well done boys.

A lovely day at Dunvant saw our 1st game for over a month. Having had our pitches at South Gower out of action for all of December the boys had 1 proper training session on Wednesday, so i was expecting rustiness. How wrong was I ?

The session we did have wednesday was good and showed some very encouraging signs. The boys, thankfully carried on where they left off today with an outstanding performance against a strong Dunvant side.

The game started as we kicked to Dunvant, we soon turned over the ball with good tackling and rucking and Moggy picked up and went. Tom was held up metres short of the line but after our forwards driving Tom over the line, he managed to ground it for our 1st try. This was converted by Kieran Charles.
Next up was Owen Renowden. After a Dunvant scrum, which George Heard won against the head, some good work from our backs, broke the line and was tackled around 10 yards out. From the ruck Owen picked up and smashed his way through Dunvant's defence to score a well taken try. Kieran converted.
Next was contender for try of the day. We had a scrum on the half way on the far side of the pitch. Heardy hooked clean ball, Moggy fed Kieran who did a dummy switch with Callum and straightened up. He drew his man, fed Luke Davies and Luke cut back inside past a few Dunvant players to score a very well worked try. Kieran converted.
Dunvant then replied with an excellent try by their scrum half. Dunvant won their lineout and the scrum half went around the back of the lineout and darted through for a well taken try which was converted.
Straight from kick off we put Dunvant under pressure. Our defence was superb at times and our back line did not give Dunvant an inch. We turned them over in their 22 after great rucking from our forwards and Jack Bates peeled off the back and around the blindside to smash through tackles to score. Kieran converted.
Again, Dunvant came back at us and lack of tackling around the legs and some good mauling from Dunvant, they scored in the corner which was converted.
There was still more time in the half for another. This time lovely hand in the back and especially Kieran Charles who dummied past one then released his back got the ball to Cameron Barker. Cam was tackled and offloaded to Tom Mogridge. Moggy seemed to do the impossible and kept going blind turning, spinning and ducking out of at least 4 tackles to score in the corner. Great try that Kieran converted.

Half time:
Dunvant 14 - South Gower 35

Subs were made at half time so every one of our 15 players played.
We started where we left off with the second contender for try of the day. After gathering the Dunvant restart, Moggy caught the ball and made for the opposition. Some good rucking ensured clean ball. The ball was passed to Kieran who ghosted past his man, drew the centre, passed to Callum Carson, who drew his man and popped to Ethan Smith on the wing who darted up the touchline to score a great team try. Kieran converted. This was an excellent example of our back line keeping its shape and staying wide to let the ball do the work. On top of this, the boys were taking the ball at pace which created an excellent try.
Next up was Ethan again. I cant comment on the try as i was tending to an injured Owen Renowden who superbly cleared the ball from his own try line but to be tackled in the process and injure his knee. Anyway, as i didn't see it, i will make it up :-) Good chasing saw us turnover the ball and then the ball passed through every team members hands for Ethan to score. Kieran converted.
To keep rotating the team, Callum came off and was replaced by Cameron who moved to outside half and Kieran in the centre. We won the ball in the scrum, fed Cameron who made a break past his opposite number. Cam was tackled 7 metres from the line only to pop to the oncoming steam train (Kieran Charles) who smashed his was through to score a good try. Kieran converted.
The ref signalled last play and South Gower gained a penalty on the halfway line by the touchline. As i was barking orders to put it through the hands, Moggy had tapped, unaware to everyone except for him and the ref, he darted down the line to score an unopposed try. Great quick thinking from the Mogman ! Jack Bates stepped up and converted.

This was simply an outstanding team performance. Our forwards competed in the tight and often came out best and our backs angles of running and passing was a joy to watch. Maybe no training works ey ?

Players to Mention:

Tom Mogridge : A couple of wrong decisions made when going blind instead of releasing our backs but this kid is like a slippery eel. He wriggles his way out of everything, tackled everything and delivered the ball well and deserved his 3 tries today. Excellent Game Moggy !

Kieran Charles : Commanded his back line superbly today. A couple of loose miss passes didn't put him off as he constantly broke the dunvant gain line and intelligently distributed at the right time. In my opinion, his best game in an all blacks shirt. Well done Charlo !

Owen Renowden : Hit the rucks with aggression, strong and direct in his running, even making superb clearing kicks from his own line summed up an excellent performance from Owen which he rounded off with a try. Well done O !

Ethan Smith : Came on as sub in the second half and finished his 2 tries superbly. Tackled well and put pressure on the opposition every time they had possession. Another great performance from Ethan !

Jack Bates : I thought Jack had a very good game today. His tackling was great along with his rucking and mauling. He took his try very well but his intelligence to know Moggy was taken in and to ship the ball out to Kieran was shown on several occasions. Great game Bates !

As i said, this was most probably our best performance of the season and i hope to keep the momentum going into training and for Bryncoch at home next week, who we know are a strong team.

Well done lads, I am extremely proud of all of you after today's performance.

After weeks of no training due to the weather and 2 weeks of postponed games, the boys were eager to get going. Unfortunately, the lack of training showed as we looked rusty in areas.
However, we started the game brightly with some good running from Ethan Smith, Kieran Charles and Callum Carson. The breakthrough came in the first half when a lovely break from Kieran and quick thinking allowed him to offload to Callum who raced clear to score the first try. Kieran stepped up to convert.
The game restarted and we knocked on which gave Vadre the chance to put us under pressure. Their big forward pack kept rucking and rucking and got to within 5 metres from the line but Kieran came out of the maul with the ball and fed Moggy who cleared our lines. We gave good chase and closed Vadre down in their 22. After a couple more phases by Vadre our back line rushed up quickly to put them under pressure and Ethan Smith intercepted the ball. Ethan was held 10 metres out by his opposite number but a good loop and shout from Callum, alerted Ethan who passed for Callum to step one player and dive over for his second of the game. Kieran Charles stepped up and nailed the conversion.

Half Time

Vadre 0 - South Gower 14

Changes were made at half time to ensure that all 14 of our boys played. Moggy made an appearance at prop for us and was dominant in the breakdown. Vadre came at us strong but a few missed tackles cost us as they had a ruck metres from our line. We gave a penalty away for being offside and Vadre tapped quickly and went for the corner. Unfortunately we were not switched on enough and didnt face up, even though we talked about this before the game. Vadre scored in the corner and converted. With 10 minutes remaining, the game was swinging both ways. We had a few chances with Max Collis making a nice run but the support was lacking. Vadre put us under more pressure and some excellent defence, namely from Tom Mogridge ensured we turned the ball over and cleared downfield. In the final minute, Jack Bates went on a surging run through the centre and set up the ruck. When the ball was not coming, the referee blew for full time.

Players to mention.

Kieran Charles - Ran sideways a few times but when he ran straight, Vadre had no answer for him. Kieran constantly breaks tackles but has the sense to offload at the right time setting up a try for the team today. Good game Kieran.

Ethan Smith - Tackled everything, tended to drift in midfield a bit but after vocal support kept his position and made some timely runs. His rush defence led to his interception and good offload to Callum set up our second try. Well done Ethan.

Callum Carson - Needs to keep his tackles lower, but his aggression cannot be faulted. Ripped the ball several times and is starting to run straight !!!!! Rewarded for his fine support today with 2 good tries. Well done Cal.

Tom Mogridge - Scrum half for the first half and delivered the ball away well. Played prop in the second half and dominated the breakdown. His quick thinking and excellent mauling technique brought a comment of "He is like a drainpipe rat" from one of the Vadre supporters. This, I take as a compliment. Excellent game Mogman, keep it up !

A bit rusty today in several areas, no doubt due to the lack of training and the visible loss of Paul and Owen. We still managed to see the game out and register a good win against a much much improved Vadre side.
Well done guys, a real tough one next week against Loughor away. No training this week due to the state of the home pitches. See you all Sunday.

Straight after our game with Fall Bay, we had Vadre. The weather was worsening and at one point the ref halted the game and we all took cover by the hedge from the hail stones !
When it stopped the game resumed and Vadre registered the first try of the game. We rushed up in defence but a simple sidestep allowed their outside half to make the break and score the first try which was converted.
We replied straight away with some lovely rucking from the forwards. Moggy fed the ball to Ethan who changed direction blind (to my disbelief !) but managed to evade several tackles and dive over (Thankfully !) Callum stepped up and converted.
Vadre came straight back at us with their big forwards leading the way. A couple of missed tackles allowed Vadre to register their 2nd try of the game which was converted.
Thankfully we pulled ourselves level before half time. George Heard won the ball against the head in the scrum. Moggy passed away to Ethan who released Callum who made the break. He passed to Will Lucas who sprinted straight for the corner to score a great try. Callum converted and the ref blew for half time.

South Gower 14 - Vadre 14

After addressing where we were going wrong at half time we picked our game up and took the game to Vadre. First up was Callum Carson. We saw no sideways running or little pirouettes this week, just straight running which broke tackles. Callum broke the tackle and raced clear for his first of the game. Kieran converted. Next play was a maul on the halfway line which we won and smuggled the ball back to Jack Bates at the back. Jack made the blind, but in the tackle, Callum came on the loop, received the ball and made his way for the line to score his second try. Kieran converted.
The last try was a great example of our rushing defence. Vadre won their scum, passed to the outside half who threw the ball to his centre but Callum was there in a flash and intercepted to race clear from halfway to score his third of the day. The conversion was missed and the ref blew for full time.

Vadre were much improved from last season testing us well taking the lead twice, but our handling out wide was too much as we registered a good victory.

Another miserable morning but the pitch was ok.
Fall Bay started very brightly and broke clear on the blind side of a ruck and registered an early try which was converted. Again at a ruck, Fall Bay broke free again, only this time Moggy caught the opposition and made a wonderful tackle metres from the line. We turned them over and cleared our lines.
This was then the turning point for us. First up Kieran Charles took the ball straight and burst through several tackles to score a powerful try. Kieran then converted it. Next up was Michael Jones. Michael received the ball wide and skipped through 2 tackles to race clear to score. Kieran converted.
Then some good work by our forwards allowed Paul Jones to charge over the line for our third try. Kieran converted.

Half Time:
South Gower 21 - Fall Bay 7

We started the second half as we finished. Good work by our forwards in the ruck area allowed Morgan Lucas at scrum half to release our backs. Kieran passed to Ethan who in turn released Cameron who stepped passed tackles and scored a great team try. Kieran, again, converted.
Again, good forward pressure created a good platform from which we fed Kieran who was tackled but offloaded to George Grammenos who powered his way over. Kieran converted.
From the kick off, Morgan Lucas collected and made a fine run. The forwards rucked and got the ball to Ethan who jinked his way through several tackles and raced clear for a try. Kieran converted. To finish the game, our forwards again turned over the ball and fed Ethan who in turn fed Kieran who broke the line and made a 50 yard dash for the line. Tired, he got up and converted his own try.

Kieran Charles: Lovely hands, massive tackles and great intelligence of space. Excellent game.

George Heard: Won several balls against the head, tackled well and did his forward job efficiently. Very good game !

Paul Jones: A beast in the breakdown and an animal in the loose. A great performance rewarded with a try.

Morgan Lucas: In only his 5th game ever in rugby and with 30 minutes coaching at scrum half, he excelled in moving the ball away from the breakdown, tackling and making ground. Excellent game Morgan !

I was looking for a positive response after last week and we got it ! Much more aggressive in the forwards and great hands and straight running in the backs ensured the boys registered a comprehensive victory. Well done boys.

Thank you to Burry Port for travelling down to South Gower at short notice after the weekend of bad weather. As always, our mini pitch was in perfect condition.
From the start, we were not switched on in this game. We were not aggressive in the breakdown and got turned over too many times through no rucking at all and not enough support with the ball carrier.
On the other hand, Burry Port were excellent in this area.
The first try of the game was scored by Burry Port. Some good rucking and running drew our back in tight and when the ball was passed wide, our backs were to bunched and their winger sprinted clear from the halfway line. This was converted. We got close a couple of times to Burry Port's line but on several occasions, the wrong decision was made and we were turned over, and the opposition cleared their lines.

End of the 1st 3rd:
South Gower 0 - Burry Port 7

Changes were made to ensure everyone played and we performed a little better this half. From our kick off to the corner, Burry Port fumbled the ball and Moggy was straight on him putting him under pressure. Tom ripped the ball by their line but couldnt drive over. The pack came in support and the ball went to Kieran who was stopped short. We recycled it and Callum managed to go over for our first try. This was converted by Kieran.
Lots more turnovers for both sides saw us pressure Burry Port with a good run from Callum. We had a ruck a metre short of their try line and Morgan Lucas picked it up and put it down to score. This was converted by Kieran.
Unfortunately, some missed tackles allowed Burry Port to register a try this third and take the game into the final third tied at 14-14.

We had our chances in the final third to win the game but some silly errors and lack of rucking limited our chances. On the other hand, Burry Port were switched on and capitalised on our mistakes to score 2 more converted tries.

Burry Port thoroughly deserved this win as they outplayed us from the start. We were not switched on and ball watched for several periods throughout the game. We were missing tackles and running sideways, things i thought we sorted out at under 10 level.

Hopefully this is a good thing which will make us concentrate straight from kick off and play as a team. Please could everyone make the effort to train Wednesday (providing the weather lets us train) as we will look to work on the things that we are not doing right on Sundays.

Thanks, for your effort and patience as i know we were the only age group for the club playing at home, but thankfully our pitch is playable in most conditions.

A nice morning for rugby started with a minutes silence for remembrance Sunday which all children through all age groups for all teams behaved impeccably. Thank you boys.
We had 19 players this morning and Dunvant had 15. It was agreed that we would play 3 thirds.

We started the game well and put early pressure on Dunvant. Loose ball was gathered and fed to our backs with Callum Carson stepping a few tackles to race over under the posts for a great try. On a very windy day, the conversion was missed by Kieran.
Dunvant restarted and several turnovers later, Dunvant had a scrum in their 22. Ethan dropped back for the clearing kick. Dunvant kicked and Ethan gathered superbly on the halfway line. With Dunvant rushing up on him, he made for the corner. Ethan dived and stretched and just made it in the corner for an very well taken try. Kieran Charles stepped up and nailed the conversion. Kieran at outside half, then made a lovely break through the middle and passed well to Ethan who was tackled short of the line and knocked it on.

End of 1st third. Score: South Gower 12 - Dunvant 0

Many substitutions were made for all to play. Dunvant applied more pressure on us this third. Their forward play was excellent and like Wales last night, we were getting turned over at the breakdown as their rucking was superb. They kept the ball in their forwards and made several yards spending large periods of play in our 22. Some great tackling from our players kept them out. Dunvant had 2 penalties 5 yards out but we tackled them back with Jack Bates making a crunching tackle forced the knock on. On our defensive scrum, Moggy picked up and went blind from his own line, drew his man and released Luke Davies. Some excellent tackling from Dunvant took Luke into touch by the halfway line.
When Dunvant were penalised on their 10 yard line, Jack Bates went to the ref and took a quick tap. Jack went forward then made for the corner. Under several tackles by the line, Jack stretched out and grounded the ball for an excellent try. Kieran stepped up and kicked the extra 2 points. On the restart, Dunvant put the pressure on again but some excellent one on one tackles from Luke Davies and Will Lucas stopped Dunvant progressing.

End of 2nd third. Score: South Gower 19 - Dunvant 0

Again, many substitutions were made to ensure everyone played. We started this period well but the pressure from Dunvant's pack was giving us scrappy ball for Moggy to release his backs. Ieaun Hulme made a fantastic break dodging through several tackles making 40 yards. He was tackled in the 22 but had the sense to run and pop the ball up to an onrushing Ethan who scored a fabulous team try. Great support showed with a fantastic try to watch. Unfortunately, Cameron stepped up and missed the conversion.
Again, Dunvant came straight at us but our defence held firm with some great tackles going in. Some lovely handling from our backs gave Kieran the opportunity to make the break and then send a lovely looping pass to Callum which he gathered superbly before being stopped. There was an injury, which the ref stopped for. We restarted with our scrum and we then made a break with Callum in the midfield and our forwards got their to support him. From the ruck Moggy picked up and darted over in the corner for another well taken team try. Callum stepped up but unfortunately missed the conversion. (3 out of 5 conversions missed = windy day).
Late on the game, Ieaun Hulme made another lovely break and offloaded to the looping Callum who was stopped by an excellent tackle. With minutes left, the ball was loose just outside our 22 when Morgan Lucas picked it up and made a cracking break stepping through several tackles to make it up to the opposition 22 where he was tackled into touch. Great effort from Morgan.

I was very pleased with our overall performance today and especially our defence. We hardly missed a tackle but credit to Dunvant, they made the yards with some excellent work from their forwards picking and driving. We need to be more aggressive in the forwards and ruck properly and make sure the ball is secured properly instead of panicking and running sideways only to be tackled backwards and lose several yards !

Players to mention:

Ethan Smith: This boy is a special talent. Playing a year up, he still, week in week out produces excellent performances and capped of his game with excellent tackling and 2 very very well taken tries. Awesome !

Ieaun Hulme: Made a couple of lovely breaks, running well with the ball in 2 hands and offloading perfectly in the tackle setting up Ethan's second try. Tackled everything that came his way. A very good performance from Ieaun.

Tom Mogridge: Delivered the ball well from the breakdown and did his bit in the mauls ripping it from the onrushing Dunvant forwards. Took his try well and performed well all game.

To be honest, the entire backline in all periods deserve a mention as their handling was good and their defence was superb. Well done lads.

First of all, thanks to Penclawdd for agreeing to play after both of our games were called off at 9am. Penclawdd came to South Gower with only 9 players and 1 of them was too ill to play. Understanding that past games have been a bit one sided, I decided to lend them some of our accomplished players. Callum and Max played for Penclawdd first half and Cameron, Luke and Jack played for them in the 2nd half.
The weather was atrocious with driving rain from the west scaring off some of the supporters into the clubhouse, the kids, stayed and played !

We started well, some good hands putting Ethan Smith over in the corner which was converted by Kieran. Then, some good work and driving from our forwards set the ruck up 10 metres out. Moggy released Cameron at outside half who stepped his way over under the posts. Kieran converted. Next up was Moggy. Our forwards created a ruck which Moggy picked up and ran. It looked as if the ref was going to blow as the maul had come to a stand still but Moggy, came out of it unaware to everyone and sprinted down the line for his first try of the day. Ethan converted. Penclawdd responded with some excellent running from Callum ! who was driving them forward. The ref blew for half time, South Gower 21 - Penclawdd 0

Callum and Max came back to the Gower with Cam and Luke playing now for Penclawdd. Penclawdd kicked off and our forwards set up a maul. Jack Bates then peeled of the back and dashed 60 metres for a good try. This was converted by George Grammenos.
Again, Penclawdd kicked off and we drove forward and again, our forwards set up good ball for Moggy. Tom fed Kieran who made the break from their 22 and broke through for his first of the day. Callum converted. Penclawdd then had a player injured so Jack Bates played for the remaining 15 minutes for Penclawdd with good effect.

Next was the try of the day. We worked the ball out to Ethan on the wing who made some good yards before being tackled. Ethan offloaded to Callum in the tackle who himself was tackled but as he went down, he passed to Kieran who was in support who scored under the posts. Great try. This was converted by George Heard.
Callum then made a lovely break and looked certain to score. But !, Luke Davies had him in his sights. I was next to the Penclawdd coach and said dont worry, Luke will have him. Callum had a 10 metre head start but as i predicted, Luke chased him down and made an excellent try saving tackle for Penclawdd.
Moggy was next up for another try after good pressure by Gower, we had a ruck 10 metres from their try line and Moggy picked up and stretched over. This was converted by Kieran. I then gave specific instructions to Kieran and Callum to move the ball to Morgan Lucas and Max Collis on the wings. Good hands then released Max and he sprinted in from the half way to score a great try. Georgie G converted.
Last play and Callum made a break through the centre and sprinted unopposed from 70 yards for our final try. Ethan stepped up and converted.

The boys played really well in terrible conditions and some lovely tries were scored. I don't like seeing one sided matches hence we lent Penclawdd 3 district players. However, good team play proved the difference with South Gower playing some beautiful rugby at times.
Thanks to Max, Moggy, Cam, Gerogie G, Georgie H, Sam, Jack, Callum, Luke, Kieran, Owen and Ethan for volunteering to play for Penclawdd, this is a true sign of sportsmanship and keenness to play rugby. Well done boys.

Players to mention:

Callum Carson: Played his heart out for Penclawdd and gave his all, made some lovely tackles for both teams, played his part in the try of the day and scored a cracker of his own !

Kieran Charles: Made some crunching tackles, led the line well and distributed well. Scored 2 good tries to round off a good performance.

Tom Mogridge: Got the ball away from the contact well today to release his back line. Tackled everything and was always in the thick of it resulting in 2 good tries.

Cameron Barker: Led the line well for us in the first half and scored a lovely try. Played very well for Penclawdd in the 2nd half and made some crucial tackles.

Mumbles 7 - South Gower 21

Mumbles, home or away is always a very tough game as they are strong in all areas. We knew this would be tough and did switch on from the off although some areas were a bit rusty. We seemed to panic on the ball a bit rather than set up the ruck/maul and release our backs. Saying that, it only lasted a few minutes as we started to stamp our mark on the game. Our forwards rucked very well and the support was there in the mauls. Moggy was delivering the ball to Kieran much better this week and we soon got our back line moving with some good runs from Kieran and Callum. After good running we set up a ruck just inside our half and Jack Bates picked up and went open. He went round the first tackle and straightened up and went through 2 more tackles and scored a good try in the corner. Kieran stepped up to kick the conversion.
A couple more times we went close again with good running from Kieran to make the break, offloading to Callum who unfortunately spilled the ball on the try line under pressure from a good Mumbles tackle. After some more good pressure from Mumbles, we had a lineout 5 metres from our own line. The long ball to Jack Bates at the back of the lineout from Paul set him free rampaging down the line which relieved the pressure. Mumbles applied more pressure but the ball could not come out of the maul on the South Gower try line and the ref blew for half time leaving the score poised at 0-7.

We started well again in the second half and after a Mumbles knock on, we had a scrum 5 meters out. Moggy went blind, drew the winger and popped the ball to Ethan who dived and stretched under pressure from 2 Mumbles tackles to score right in the corner. Kieran stepped up and converted. Mumbles then came more into the game but some superb tackling from Jack Bates and George Heard halted their progress. However, Mumbles made a good break and slipped a few tackles to register a good try which was converted.
Knowing the game was tight, we upped our game and some great work in the rucks from Owen Renowden secured us several turnover balls. Finally, with a driving maul inside the Mumbles half, Jack Bates ripped the ball free, and smashed his way through several of the Mumbles forwards and stretching for the line to score his second of the game. Again, Kieran stepped up and nailed the conversion.
Final Score : Mumbles 7 - South Gower 21.

The boys played very well and got better as the game went on. Some missed tackles led to the Mumbles try but otherwise we were defensively sound. Rucking improved with Owen Renowden deserving a special mention. The backs used the ball well and we witnessed some good passing plays.

Players to Mention:

Owen Renowden: Great game from Owen in the tight and loose. Won several turnovers by getting to the ruck first and ripping the ball free. Excellent Owen !

Jack Bates: Another excellent performance from Jack. Tackled everything that came his way, dominated in the mauls ripping several balls out and scored 2 great tries. Awesome !

George Heard: In the loose was fantastic. Made several important tackles and played his heart out. Best game of the season for George so far. Well done mate.

As a group, the backs defended very well and put some big hits in which the forwards got back to help out with.

Mumbles 63 - South Gower 19

We started the game very brightly with good work by the forwards setting up ball for the backs. We went blind from the ruck and released Will Lucas, who made his way past numerous players to score a very good try which was converted by Cameron Barker.
Some poor tackling and indiscipline saw mumbles score 4 converted tries to take the game into half time at 28-7.
As we were 3 players short due to injuries, lost gum shield and players of to the liberty to watch the Ospreys, we had to play 3 players from the first game. Callum came on at outside half for the first 7 minutes of the second half and Kieran for the remainder. Both players were under the instruction not to score tries and release their backs and bring players into the game which they did well.
From the restart, we secured the ball, set it up and released our backs. Callum fed Ieaun who broke his tackle and raced over for a well taken try. The conversion was missed. Callum then broke another tackle and then passed to Ieaun Hulme who drew his man perfectly before releasing Will Lucas for his second try in the corner. Some good rugby was being played when we had possession but our tackling was letting us down. Unfortunately Mumbles scored 5 converted tries in the second half and we finished the game with our heads down and a scoreline of 63-19.

Players to Mention

Will Lucas: Will had a very goood game, made some crucial tackles and scored 2 great tries. Great game Will.

Dylan John: Starting to show his aggression in the forwards and made some excllent turnovers in the maul. Did well to spoil their lineout. Impressive game from Dylan.

Harry Silvey: Smallest player on the pitch, best tackler ! Made several key tackles on their big players. Well done Harry.

Ieaun Hulme: Ieaun ran superbly and passed very well. An all round good game for Ieaun. Well done mate.

I was pleased with our offensive play but slightly disappointed with our tackling. We too often let players run through all of us with poor tackling attempts which inevitably is going to lead to conceding tries. On the other hand, heads up, we played well in patches and it is minor things we need to work on to get us working as a team more efficiently. Training Wednesday 6.30. We are home to Tumble next week.

Following on from the Pontardullais game, the rain hadn't eased up. We started the game well, with players playing in new positions, adapting very well to work as a team. There was too much panicking sometimes when the ball was in hand as if it was a hot potato, which provided our backs with scrappy ball.
However, we started well, with Penlan having a lineout on their 22, they tapped back scrappy ball and Morgan Lucas picked up and broke through a few tackles to score a good try in the corner. George Grammenos kicked the conversion.
Next up was the try of the game. From a ruck, the balled was passed to Ieaun Hulme who fed Will Lucas out wide. Will got tackled 5 metres from the line but passed the ball to Ieaun who was looping around in support. Ieaun then raced over the line for a great South Gower try. Again, George Grammenos kicked the conversion. Some slack tackling and indecision's at the breakdown allowed Penlan to score their first try after some good work by their forwards which was converted. After the restart, Penlan put us under more pressure and were awarded a penalty 5 metres from our line. They tapped and ran through 5 poor tackles to score their second try which was also converted.

Half Time :

South Gower 14 - Penlan 14

We addressed our frailties at half time and we came out for the second half fighting. Lovely rucking from our forwards provided the platform for secure ball to our backs. Good handling got the ball to Luke Davies who raced away to score his first try of the game. Morgan Lucas kicked the extra 2 points. More of the same was to follow as we shipped the ball to Luke again early who used his blistering pace to round everyone and score his second try. Again, Morgan Lucas converted. Camped in Penlan's half as we were for this second period, Morgan Lucas made a great break and scored his second try of the game. Morgan then nailed the conversion.
Again, good work from our forwards provided the platform for Morgan to pick up and go on a run. Morgan was brought down a metre from the line but had the sense to pop the ball up to the supporting Luke Davies for Luke to score his third try. Morgan picked himself up and kicked his 4th conversion.

Final Score: South Gower 42 - Penlan 14.

This was a much better performance from last week as our forwards were more switched on at the breakdown. Some good passing and support set the standard for our performance, however, our tackling at times was poor and our inability to hold onto the ball without panicking was all too evident. Saying that, this was an overall good performance and a good win for the boys.

Players to mention:

Morgan Lucas: In only his second game, Morgan showed he is picking the game up quickly with several blistering runs and good kicking and tackling. Great game Morgan.
Ieaun Hulme: Settling into his new fly half role and performing with confidence. Passing was excellent and his tackling was even better !
Dylan John: Showed the aggression that goes with his size ! Good running, rucking, mauling and tackling from Dylan. Well done mate.
Will Lucas: Passed the ball well and made some nice breaks. Great thinking to offload to Ieaun for the try and great tackling throughout. Well done Will.
Luke Davies: Last seasons most improved player had a great game. Tackling was sound and his running was good. Popped up for 3 tries proving that when he is on top of his game then not many can touch him. Well done Luke.

We have Mumbles next week so we will be in for another tough game. Keep training and learning and i am sure we will be fine. Well done all.

What a horrible morning to play rugby. Rain driving from the west saw everyone soaked !
However, the game itself was a cracker. Pontardullais came to the Gower boasting several district players so we knew it would be a tough match and that we had to show them respect and we know from last season also, what a good team they are.
South Gower, boasting 4 Llwchwr district players and also 1 Swansea Schoolboy were switched on from the off this week.
Play was a little scrappy from both teams to start with good defending from both sides. I feel we had the upper hand in the forwards and this provided good platform for our backs to work off. First notable move of the game saw a South Gower scrum. The ball was won and Moggy provided Kieran with clean ball at outside half. Kieran did a dummy scissors with Callum in the centre and straightened his run, drew the winger in and passed to Ethan. Ethan who sidestepped a few covering players to dive over in the corner for the first score of the game. Kieran Charles stepped up and nailed the conversion.
Pontardullais came back into the game then and some resolute defence stopped them in their tracks. Some excellent tackles and good rucking saw us turnover ball and clear our lines. Further up the field after another good ruck by South Gower, saw Moggy deliver good early ball to Kieran who in turn released Callum. Callum threw a dummy and stepped a player before racing clear to score a very good try.

Half Time:

South Gower 12 - Pontardullais 0.

We kicked off the second half and some good tackling saw us turn over ball. Unfortunately along the backs line we knocked on. Pontardullais scrum, which they won and cleared their lines with a good kick upfield. Luckily for us, Ethan was positioned well to defend it as he had Brandon from Pontardullais breathing down his neck. Pontardullais made a good few breaks through the middle of the park throughout the game but our tackling was up to the mark.
When in their 22, they would kick and have Brandon chase, but again our defence got back to stop them gaining momentum. Some lovely tackling from Ethan and Cameron prevented Pontardullais from racing away.
After several phases we found ourselves on Pontardullais' try line with a ruck. All their backs were taken in and a simple pass out would have resulted in an unopposed score but unfortunately, Moggy took the wrong decision and went himself only to be turned over on the line. However, Moggy made amends with a superb try saving tackle just when Pontardullais had broken away on the wing. We turned them over, cleared our lines and won the game 12-0.

Overall, a very professional performance from our boys, playing their own game whilst identifying Bont's threat and nullifying it. The forwards rucked and mauled very well and the backs defended very well. One thing we need to work on it making the right decisions when and when not to pass. Ball needs to be shipped away from the breakdown quickly with taking it on being the rare option instead of the preferred one. If we make the break in the back line we need to look to ship it then to our unmarked winger rather than taking on the world on your own, or passing to the winger and putting him under pressure straight away. These will be worked on and i am sure it will come in time.
Well done boys, a good win against a good Pontardullais team.

Players to mention:

Tom Mogridge: Tom had a good game, delivering away from contact well, one wrong decision but superb tackling. Took a nasty knock to his head in an accidental collision, but fresh out of A&E and with the all clear, already asking about Mumbles next week.

Ethan Smith: What a player ! Ethan is an Under 10 player, representing Swansea Schoolboys at under 11's. He was up against Llwchwr flying winger and matched him every step of the way in defence and registered a great try for his team. Great game Ethan.

Cameron Barker: Defended like a demon. Great tackling, good offloading and an all round great game. Cam's tackling has improved ten fold and it showed by him nailing his opposite number every time. Well done Cam.

Next week, Mumbles away, another tough game ! There doesn't seem to be any easy ones ! which is good for us. Keep playing as a team and the only way is up. Well done boys.

Under 11's Bryncoch V South Gower 04.10.09

Bryncoch 5 – South Gower 7

After last weeks grueling test against Waunarlwydd we should have been more switched on for this game as Bryncoch are another side that are difficult to beat especially when they play at home.

As we arrived, Bryncoch were already warming up and looked ready for a tough game, this showed almost straight away when they scored a try very early on, fortunately for us this was disallowed due to a knock on. After this initial shock the game seemed to settle down with our forwards putting in some excellent tackles, unfortunately Bryncoch finally broke our defence to score the first try of the game but didn’t manage to get the conversion.

South Gower came straight back at them with some great runs from both Moggy and Owen Renowden but we still couldn’t find a way past their strong defence. At the end of the first half we had our best chance of the game so far with a fantastic interception from Ethan Smith but once again the Bryncoch defence proved too much for us.

Half Time:

Bryncoch 5 – South Gower 0

With a serious team talk at half time our boys came out for the second half with renewed determination and started playing a much better game of rugby. Ethan again making another break for their line and although not making it all the way, gave our back line the momentum they needed to show just how good they can be. Moggy fed the ball to Kieran who powered his way between two Bryncoch players to give the ball to Callum to sprint to the corner to score our first try and to bring us level- a fantastic and well deserved try! Pressure was now on Jack Bates to convert to take us into the lead which he did with ease.

As expected Bryncoch came back at us with everything they had and would have scored if it wasn’t for the ferocious tackles from our forwards and this was proved when Bryncoch were held up over our try line. In the last few minutes of the game our boys were determined not to let the lead slip and showed some great rugby with Callum making a great run from the half way and Moggy finding the space he needed down the blind from the base of the scrum but some strong tackles made from Bryncoch stopped us getting another try. Finally Jack Bates caught the ball at the back of a South Gower lineout to have another good run but was brought down in Bryncoch’s half, and this brought the game to an end.

Overall this was a very even game but it shows we need to be switched on from the moment we kick off to ensure we don’t make games any more difficult than they need to be.

We have Pontardullias at home next week, who boast at least 7 district players. Hence no need to say will be another tough game. As Glen said, we need to be switched on from the off !

At Swansea Uplands on another beautiful morning, we played Swansea Uplands whilst we also sent a team to Bryncoch. We have 21 players in the squad, with 1 out injured and sending 12 players to Bryncoch we had 8 players fro this game. Unfortunately, in those 8 players, we only had 1 dedicated forward, which showed throughout the game.
We borrowed 2 different players from Swansea Uplands each half. The first half we borrowed Brayden and Lewis for our forwards and also played Sam Jones and Ieaun Hulme there.
Playing the first half uphill, we struggled. We were inefficient at the breakdown and could not secure any turnovers at all. Throughout the 1st half we conceded 4 tries, 2 of which were converted. We made some good tackles, namely Morgan Lucas, playing his 1st game for us.

Half Time Swansea Uplands 24 - South Gower 0

The second half started with 2 new players from the Uplands in Luke and Sam. We brought Sam Jones back out onto the wing and Ieaun Hulme to outside half moving Max Collis into the forwards and also Morgan Lucas.
We started well and the direct running of Max Collis brought us our first score of the half. The conversion rebounded back off the crossbar. Uplands restarted and Ieaun Hulme caught the ball and straight running with a few lovely steps, and Ieaun ran from his own 22 to score a great individual try. George Grammenos converted.
Uplands replied with 2 good tries of their own due to our lack of tackling, but Max Collis came strong again and powered his way over for his 2nd try of the game. George Grammenos converted. Unfortunately, Uplands made another break from the breakdown, a good covering tackle from Will Lucas brought their player down short of the line but he offloaded well and registered another try which they converted.

I was very pleased with the players today considering we only had 1 forward out of 8. It could be a case for looking at our compliment and training players in different positions. Today, the boys heads never went down and we continued to have go which was pleasing to see.

Morgan Lucas - His first rugby game and he played very well. With 1 training session under his belt he tackled like he had played for a while and made a couple of lovely breaks. Well done mate.

Ieaun Hulme - Tackled, passed, ran and did everything expected of him in position and out of position. Rounded it all off with a stunning individual try.

Max Collis - Continued from his 3 tries last week to register another 2 this week. Strong and direct in the running and tackle.

Right from the start we knew this would be a hard test as Waunarlwydd have a great team at this age and we have never beaten them before. The game started and there were some massive hits going in on both sides. Tackling was excellent and neither team could make the breakthrough. South Gower had a lineout just inside the Waun half when Jack Bates made a break. He was brought down a few metres from the try line but popped the ball up to Ethan Smith who dived over in the corner. Jack lined up the conversion but was told to wait whilst we attended to an injury. The ref then gave the go ahead and unfortunately Jack missed. Waun piled on the pressure and gained a penalty 5 metres out. Our boys lined up and as soon as the tap was made, we ploughed into the opposition with Jack Bates making a bone crunching tackle. The ball was then recycled to the Waun backs and this time Callum Carson made a bone cruncher to save a try. Forcing a knock on, we scrummed down and then cleared our lines.

Half Time:

South Gower 5 - Waunarlwydd 0

Waunarlwydd came out in the second half with renewed determination. We gave away a penalty just inside our half and did not spread out in defence and one of their players sprinted around and in at the corner. Waun then converted to make it 7-5 to them. We then applied pressure but could not find a way past their resolute defence, with Waun coming close to adding a second. With a minute remaining we had a lineout on the half way line which we secured. The forwards bound correctly providing clean ball to scrum half Tom Mogridge. Moggy then made a break. A 30 metre run was ended yards short of the line by Waun only for Moggy to pop the ball up to Kieran Charles who dived over for the winning try. Kieran picked himself up and nailed the conversion to finish the game.

Final Score:

South Gower 12 - Waunarlwydd 7

This was a massive performance from South Gower.
In my years as a coach of children's rugby, i have never witnessed such a physical and committed game from both sides. Everyone deserves a massive well done after such an intense game.

Jack Bates - His tackling was immense. Absolutely fearless and puts his body on the line for the team.
Callum Carson - Again, massive defence, flawless tackles and good running.
Kieran Charles - Ran the game at stand off, made some massive tackles and popped up for the winner.
Tom Mogridge - Got up after suffering several blows, carried on and set up the winner. Great game Tom.
Paul Jones - Rucked like a machine, tackled like a demon and had a fantastic game.

Again, well done all, This Sunday we are having 2 games away. One team will travel to Bryncoch and one to Swansea Uplands. This is not the norm, especially for away games but it does ensure everyone has a full 40 minutes of rugby on the Sunday.

A special congratulations goes out to Ethan Smith, Kieran Charles, Callum Carson, Cameron Barker and Jack Bates who have all been selected for their respective district rugby teams. A fantastic achievement for them individually and for South Gower RFC. Well done boys.

Swansea Uplands agreed to send a development side to South Gower in order for all players to have 40 minutes of rugby under their belts on a Sunday morning. This enabled us to play everybody. As agreed, we used 7 under 11 players and 3 under 10's. South Gower saw the return of Max Collis after a year out and in a new position on the wing.
The game started well for South Gower with Under 10 player Tom Jenkins scoring a great try after a well executed move in his own half. Tom Jenkins converted. Some lovely hands through the back line released Max Collis just inside his own half. Max used his pace to beat several players to register his first try of the season in the corner. The conversion was missed. Another great piece of play saw the ball passed along the back line for the Max to cut inside and pass to Fergus Kneath (Under 10) who sidestepped his way over the try line from 20 metres out. Tom Jenkins converted. Again, lovely work by the forwards set up the ruck and the ball was released all the way across the back line to Max. Max sprinted in shrugging off tackles to score his 2nd of the game. George Grammenos converted.

We subbed Tom Jenkins for Dan Pritchard (under 10) at outside half. A blistering run by our second row Dylan John set up the ruck. Again lovely hands from Ieaun Hulme released Max to score his 3rd of the game. George Grammenos converted. With 2 minutes left, the ball came out of the Swansea Uplands scrum and the alert Dylan Griffiths picked it up and dashed in from the half way line for his first of the season. Again, George Grammenos converted.

This was a good game for South Gower as it enabled players to get the full 40 minutes under their belt which i am sure will aid their development as rugby players. Some players who don't normally run with the ball when we only have one game on the weekend revelled in the freedom of the game. If i can arrange more games like this then it will be a great benefit to the players we have at the club.

Players to mention:

Dylan Griffiths: Had a great game at scrum half and delivered to his backs with confidence. His tackling has improved and he took his try very well.
George Grammenos: Revelled in this game, drove forward the team with some great runs, tackling and rucking. Well taken conversions, he had an excellent game.
Max Collis: 1st game for a year and now on the wing instead of second row, excelled and showed his pace. Excellent game.

Morgan Israel, Tom Jenkins, Fergus Kneath & Dan Pritchard: All under 10's playing up, all showed their understanding of the game with great performances.

Sunday morning, Mynydd Newydd, warm and sunny ????? something wasn't right !!!
With a squad of 16 turning up for the Gower, everyone was to play rugby. We started brightly against Penlan, with Kieran Charles smashing his way through several tackles to register his first try for the All Blacks. Jack Bates kicked the conversion. Next up was Callum Carson. Good work from our forwards, we won the scrum against the head and put it through the hands to Callum who went over for his first try of the day. Kieran Charles obliged with the conversion.
More good work from the forwards in the maul area provided Jack Bates with his try. Jack ripped the ball from the maul and proceeded to flatten several opposition players before scoring his first of the day. Callum converted.
Next up was Michael Jones, scoring his first try in the All Black shirt. Michael, curved around the entire pitch from 30 yards out to score a fine try in the corner.
The next try was a joy to watch. Starting in our half, our forwards took the ball on, with Owen, Paul and Jack combining well. We created a ruck outside the opposition 22 when the ball came to Kieran at outside half, he had the vision and threw a miss pass straight to Ethan Smith on the wing who raced home to score the games best try. Jack Bates converted.

Half time: Penlan 0 - South Gower 35

Substitutions were made at half time so everyone got game time. Some lovely play in our back sent Ieaun Hulme racing for the line. Unfortunately, Ieaun put the ball down 5 metres short thinking it was the try line. A ruck followed and Penlan were penalised for lying over the ball. From the penalty a pass was made to Cameron Barker at outside half who did a lovely switch with Kieran Charles who smashed his way over from 5 yards. Kieran converted his own try.
Ieaun, feeling quite gutted that his effort was placed short, made ammends 2 minutes later when Kieran released Ieaun to coast in from 20 yards. Owen Renowden converted.
Next up was Cameron Barker, who made a lovely sweeping break. His pace was too much for Penlan and he rounded off a great try. Kieran converted.
Penlan kick off, Jack Bates catches, try ! Jack caught the ball from kick off and raced through Penlan, hair and braids flowing, to score immediately. Callum converted.
With the game coming to an end, Callum Carson raced clear to score his second try of the day which George Heard converted to finish the game at 70 points to nil.

This was a good performance from South Gower, but in truth, did us no favours.
The boys need to know that this will definitely not happen every week with the likes of Waun, Uplands, Morriston and Mumbles to play, we are likely to find ourselves in very tough games.

Next up is Waunarlydd home Sunday, a team we have never beaten in this age group. With confidence high and the players performing, it could possibly not come at a better time.
One thing we do need to concentrate on is our teamwork. Too often players are taking the ball on for too long with players outside to pass to. We need to realise that to get better, we need to play more as a team and not as talented individuals.

Players to mention.

George Grammenos: George has been converted to hooker this year and performed fantastically. Winning several scrums against the head and accurate line out throwing, he had a great game.
Michael Jones: Michael has been playing rugby less than a year but is learning quick and showed his potential with his first try for the club.
Kieran Charles: His first tries for the All blacks, good solid performance, sure to see a lot more from Charlo !
Dylan Griffiths: Took Wednesday's training on board and was digging for the ball at scrum half and his Passing was good from the set pieces.

As i mentioned, we have Waunarlydd home Sunday in what is sure to be a tough game, but with the right attitude, TEAMWORK and belief, we have a great chance.

Match Report

Our 1st game of the season was away to Gowerton on a beautiful sunny morning. We started the 1st half well and within 2 minutes we had registered our first try. A South Gower scrum just inside the Gowerton half provided the platform for Tom Mogridge to pick up at the back of the scrum and go blind. Tom stepped a few players and sprinted in for his 1st try from 35 yards. Minutes later, good work by our forwards provided the platform for our backs. Moggy got the ball to Cameron who in turn fed Callum who powered his way through several tackles to register our second score.
Clearly buoyed by our good start, some more good mauling from our forwards, we smuggled the ball back to Jack Bates who powered his way over from 20 yards out. Gowerton restarted and we started going through the phases before more good work from the forwards presented clean ball to Moggy at scrum half. He had the vision to spot the gap and go clean through for another impressive try. Coming to half time, more pressure from the mighty all blacks provided us with our 5th try. Jack Bates ripped the ball from his opponents, peeled off the back of the maul for another try.

Half time - South Gower 25, Gowerton 0.

5 subs made at half time to ensure everyone plays, and we started on the offensive again, with some lovely hands through the backs getting the ball to Ethan Smith on the wing. Ethan defied his size stepping past players and diving over in the corner with the opposition hanging on to him. A moments lapse in concentration saw Gowerton apply pressure on us going through several phases with their forwards with good rucking and the opposition managed to slip a tackle and register a try from 20 yards.
Restart and after a good turn over and a few phases, the ball went wide to Sam Jones on the wing who was tackled. In support first was Jack Bates who drove forward and stretched for the line with Gowerton trying to hold him back, Jack scored his 3rd try.
With 5 minutes remaining, it was time for Kieran Charles to enter the fray. Kieran transferred to us from Gowerton this season. Unfortunately, Kieran suffered a nasty accident in training wednesday putting his debut for the All Blacks in doubt against his former club. After pleading and pleading to play, It was agreed to give him his 5 minutes against them. He put in a few solid tackles before setting up our last try. The ball came to him at outside half from a scrum in our own half, a dummy scissors and sprint before passing to Callum Carson on the wing, who stepped his way past several tackles to score our last try.
This was an impressive performance from the boys considering they have only had 2 training sessions since may. Parts of our play have been identified that we need to concentrate on in training which will be rectified.

Players to mention.

Sam Jones, new to rugby half way through last season, showed massive improvement, taking the ball on several times and making some great tackles.
Elliot Waddington, made some very impressive tackles before being forced off injured.
Michael Jones, another player new to the game last season, is now running with confidence and tackling really well.
Ethan Smith, an under 10 playing a year up, again showed why he is doing just that ! more impressive though was his tackling, much better. well done Ethan.
We have Penlan away next week as we will look to build on an impressive opening game of the season.

South Gower Under 12's : 2009/2010

Update Pre-Season 2009-2010
Registration is going well with 18 players now either registered or in-process. By the start of the first game, we should have 20 players with an opportunity to recruit new players at Bishopston Comp in September. Of these, we have 4 new players from Craig-y-nos (as well as an assistant coach) who are all very welcome and will easily slot into the team.

Training starts this Wednesday 5th August at 6:15pm at the club. The first few sessions will be light fitness / skills development as the majority of the team will be on vacation until end of August.

Teamer.net is now being used for all practice and match notifications. If you have not replied to your invite, please do so asap otherwise you risk not being notified. First Game will be on Sunday September 6th away at Mumbles. This will either be at Underhill or at the Comp depending on the other fixtures. Kick off will be at 11am but we will meet at 10:15 to get kit and positions organised.

South Gower U11 Ospreys Cup Festival

The Squad

South Gower U11's attended the Ospreys Junior Rugby Festival in Bridgend on April 5th.
The weather was great and at only 12 minutes per game with no half time, it promoted fast rugby. As the district selectors were present, it was also a good opportunity for the boys to show their skills.
Unfortunately, we were drawn in one of the toughest groups - some dodgy refereeing also did not help. The scores (in tries) were as follows :

Penclawdd 7 : South Gower 0
Maesteg Welsh 3 : South Gower 0
Averavon GS 0 : South Gower 0
Kenfig Hill 2 : South Gower 0

With the exception of Penclawdd, it was noticable that the standard was fairly consistent across the pools which should lead to a good tournament next year. The level of effort was excellent, however holes in the central defence and the inability to convert possession into tries is something that needs to be worked on in practice. All in all a good day out.

(Unfortunately one of the coaches was also smashed into by someone from the Penclawdd team on the M4 : at least it wasn't his wife driving !!)

Match Report
South Gower turned up with only 8 players but they put on a performance that Warren Gatland would have been proud of. The forwards did the best job so far this season of clearing out ruck ball and ensured the possession was equally matched. The backs tackled well but found it hard to offload the final pass after making a number of breaks. Joseph (who is usually the hooker) scored the first try on the wing after driving through three Fall Bay players. A few injuries occurred due to the hard ground, however all players dug deep and played on for the sake of the team. Tom Radcliffe who was starting his first game at scrum half had an excellent game. After dragging himself out of his sick bed and with the benefit of Calpol, he used his strength and running to score two excellent tries.
Fall Bay played well and their tries came from their backs - who had slightly more pace and better handling.

All in all and excellent performance which was the best score the team has had against Fall Bay - well done.

Urgent Recruitment Required !!
Unfortunately, the under 11 team has succumb this season to the very bad habit of player poaching - which has not necessarily been in the best interests of those concerned.
From a squad of in excess of 20 players last season, the usual turn out this year has decreased to 12 with only 8 turning up this week for the match. If the squad is not up to around 20 by the end of the season, then next years U12 squad may not be able to function as we start 15 a-side. South Gower U13's Sponsored Bike Ride

The U13's started their fund raising for their 2009 trip to Paris with an 11 mile sponsored cycle ride from Mumbles Pier to Swansea Marina and back. Only one accident resulting in a minor injury (Thats good for us) and multiple ice creams en-route, but a great time had by all. Thanks to all the Mums, Dads, Aunties, Uncles, Nana's & Grandad's etc. who sponsored. The funds will go along way to ensuring the boys have a memorable time in France at the 2009 International Rugby Festival.

Well done boys. Next fund raiser in the new year, any ideas????

The Mighty Gower Seniors are back!!

Our first game of the league kicked off on Saturday, an away trip to Nantgaredig a decent trip up the motorway to Carmarthenshire. Work commitments and early season injuries caused some squad problems but we fielded a strong side by k.o at 2:30pm.

Gower started slowly, absorbing pressure from the home side but the defence was much improved from the pre-season games. However, once we settled the territory and possession went with the visitors. A strong mobile Gower pack fronted up well against the abrasive Nantgaredig forwards, dominating the set pieces particularly the line out.

The first half was a tense affair with both sides swapping missed penalty attempts. With the pack on top and the wind behind us Gower should have made more of their numerous chances, coming close to the line on a number of occasions but falling short at the final stage. A second missed penalty and poor decision making during a crucial 10-minute period before half time (with a Nantgaredig player down in the bin) left the game at a tense 0-0 at half time.

During half time the coaches highlighted the need to add structure and have more composure in the final quarter, but with the Gower fitness showing already the second half looked positive. 

Again the set piece worked well especially the line out particularly Rennie who soared like a migrating salmon all day frustrating and stealing a number of Nantgaredig throws. Dai (Gower fly-half) controlled the game well gaining good ground with an assured boot; Colsey carried the ball well in contact (as usual) and an excellent debut from another Dai in the centre adds positive signs for the coming season.

A further mention should go out to Gavin "The ginger brute" Evans...who produced a miracle tackle under his own posts to prevent a certain score! A couple of defensive mistakes in the second half allowed them in for two scores, against the run of play and a further penalty left the game 13-0 to the home side with 10 minutes remaining. Gower showed commitment
and passion but the early missed chances cost us dearly and the game ended 13 (unlucky for Gower) -0. 

In short, the game showed some good aspects, the forwards dominated, the defence was strong but we have to take our chances and Saturday should be looked upon at 4 points lost against a team that was very beatable. 

Our first home fixture is on Saturday against Pontrhydyfen....a 2:30pm k.o and a chance to put things right!!

SOUTH GOWER 1st XV: NEW SEASON - NEW HEAD COACH - NEW PLAYERS

A new structure is in place for the forthcoming season for our South Gower Seniors. New head coach Mark "Fitz" Fitzgerald has been putting the squad through their paces accompanied by Assistant Coach Phil "Teach" Jones. New fixture sec., new team managers, all in all a fresh approach to the start of the season.

Our boys are in a new strip where we are actively looking for a 1st team sponsor, so please speak up or contact an officer of the club.

U12's - Super 12's Finalists

South Gower RFC's under 12's were finalist in the Swansea District Super 12's tournament. Having finished top in their pool after games against Vadre, Mumbles & Uplands, the Gower All Blacks defeated Dunvant RFC in the semi-final to meet Morriston RFC in the final.
The final was a close game losing narrowly two tries to one. A great ending to a mixed but progressive season finsihing in second place to all the Swansea District rugby clubs.

South Gower RFC enjoyed a day out in support of the Ospreys becoming the first region to clinch the EDF anglo / welsh cup. Over 100 club members travelled up in convoy filling two coach loads plus others who made their own way to the hallowed turf of Twickenham. A day for the young an old to enjoy and soak up the spirit of our cup winning region beating a consistant top 4 Guiness Premiership side. U12's Birchgrove RFC V South Gower RFC

South Gower RFC played Birchgrove for their fourth outing of this season that had previously resulted in three defeats, to a team with a strong pack of forwards. The Gower boys were determined to turn the tables on this day however. The Gower forwards started with Dylan Morgan, Micah Pugh putting in the early pressure, living in Birchroves faces which allowed the Gower backs to reveal their ball handling skills, playing with width that sent outside centre Chay Smith over three times in the first first half along with winger Kieran Shreves who scored via his blistering pace trimming his way along the touch line. Similarly well positioned full back Jack Hooper-Lewis crossed the white wash. 5 well orchestrated tries in 25 minutes was an awesome start and a great spectacle.
The second half Birchgrove new they had to tighten up at front and retain possession. The change in tactics, stretched South Gower and at times frustrated them by not having any valuable possession to work with. Slowly but surely though, The Gower All Blacks turned the screws, flankers Eliot Clement and Rob Mogridge worked hard to steel turnover ball with Rob Mogridge claiming his 5 pointer followed by Chay Smith claiming a well read intercepted ball crossing for his fourth try of the game. Jacob Clement at outside half who directed and released the backs for many a move with his safe hands and awareness of space on the field also crossed to put the game to bed to finally claim a well earned victory with a great team performance.
The team are all performing well and more importantly performing well for one another with great support play seen throughout the match.

Man of the Match: Jacob Clement for his visionary use of space and awreness that led to many talented breaks and subsequent tries.

U12's Round Up (Waunarlwydd, Dunvant, Uplands)

South Gower under 12's are still building even though the season is drawing to a close. A strong outing against Cwmavon without conceding any points. Another strong performance against Waunarllwydd RFC with 39 un answered points all bodes well with forthcoming tournaments on the horizon "The Penclawdd Invitational Gower Cup" won by Uplands RFC for the last two seasons and the District selction process tournament "Super 12's".

The Gower All Blacks have had one set back in their recent string of wins, defeat to Dunavnt. Being Easter Sunday, Gower were depleted of a full side with only 11 players available and two loan players from Dunvant. The signs were still evident of a deveoping yet talented Gower side with two first half tries by Jacob Clement and Chay Smith. The second half saw a shift in tactics by Dunvant recognising Gower were fielding a strong compliment of backs but missing the workhorses up front. Dunvant cleverly stuck the ball up their jumper and drove on through, clawing their way back in for a 19, 12 win to Dunvant.

Sunday 6th April - South Gower V Swansea Uplands. A fixture which has always been entertaining from the days of U8's. Uplands however have developed their performances of recent seasons while South Gower have only built of late. This was a game that Gower needed to bench mark their progress.

South Gower's first 10 minutes off loaded relentless pressure. Gower flankers Rob Mogridge and Eliot Clement were steeling everything. The 9, 10, 12 & 13 unit (Jamie Thomas, Jacob Clement, Sam Pritchard & Chay Smith) was also firing on all cylinders, switches, dummy runs, good support play, was well executed which eventually sent winger Jack Rosser in for the first try. Uplands, fought back well with the odd steel but Gower maintained pressure but failed to take more points due to the Uplands defence.
The second half, was played in a similar vein, plenty of Gower pressure, solid Uplands defence but no points for the score board. With 5 minutes left in the game, Gower turned up the heat. Deep in the oppositions half, the forwards were relentless with exceptional ball carrying by Seb Heinrich, Gavin Shearer and Alex Ashburner. A well earned 20m driving maul, releasing the ball for jinking runs for Gower boys opened up the gaps allowing Sam Pritchard to cross the white wash. 2 minutes left on the clock from a restart, South Gower wanted more, and off they went on a rampage, Jacob Clement saw the gaps and took his chances and weaved through to deliver another try, converted by Sam Jones to end on another clean sheet with a 17 point win.

South Gower missing a few players went into the game on the back of a string of good performances, where they have improved week on week and this match proved to be no exception.
The game started a little bit scrappily with tight forward exchanges as the two teams tried to find each other out. However, it was South Gower that took the initiative with a probing drive down the right hand side and when Rob Morgidge came out with the ball South Gower had the overlap and a quick pass to Jacob Clement enabled him to put his head back and go for the try line to score, his brother Eliot converting the try.
South Gower forwards were now getting on top and securing good ball for the backs and when the ball came out quickly to Jamie Thomas he made a break down the blindside and passed to Jacob who went on a weaving run to score his second try. South Gower kept the pressure up on Cwmavon who were beginning to become rattled and when South Gower came up fast with an aggressive defence, Cwmavon spilt the ball near their own line and Jacob was on hand to pick up and collect his and South Gower’s third try, which was converted by Jamie Thomas.
Cwmavon forwards began to get back into the game and it became a tight and scrappy affair again, but South Gower managed to spread the ball quickly from a breakdown just inside their own half and Seb Heinrich went on a weaving run to score out wide, right on half time.

Cwmavon came out determined to win the second half battle and the first 10 minutes were very tight, a good break down the left hand side by Cwmavon released their wing who looked odds on to score, but Rob Mogridge had other ideas and pulled off an outstanding cover tackle, (he seemed to be everywhere) he was quickly assisted by Dylan Morgan and between them they managed to save the day and keep their try line in tack.
The game continued in a forward dominated game with both teams fighting for superiority, but it was South Gower who managed to get the first try of the second half with good close contact work by Sam Pritchard who forced himself over. When Cwmavon took a quick restart, South Gower were at sixes and sevens, but excellent scrambling defence managed to stop Cwmavon. However, they could smell the try and kept the pressure on, it was only South Gower’s aggressive defence with Rob and Sam P leading the way, with Sam stealing the ball in the tackle twice, which managed to keep Cwmavon out.
Cwmavon were desperate to get something out of the game and kept the pressure on South Gower, but when they spread the ball out, Eliot Clement intercepted the pass to run from his own 22 to score under the posts, Max Adams converting. The second half was a much tighter affair and Cwmavon made South Gower work for everything, Gavin Shearer made some hard yards in the forwards, which helped set up the final try which came from more tight forward play, where Eliot Owen drove his way over to claim the try.

An excellent performance in the face of a tough team, good tackling by everyone enabled us to keep a clean sheet and you should all be proud of stepping up to the mark against an aggressive team, I know I am.

The second away fixture to Pontardulais RFC this season. At the last run out we felt robbed of a win, even though the Gower All Blacks had a solid performance. This time out we were all the wiser and new we had to play to the whistle but make sure the score line reflected the team efforts.
Gower started off slow but grew in confidence as the Gower forwards increased their intensity at the breakdown allowing quick ball for the backs.The first try of the game came from a Gower set piece where outside half Chay Smith pop passed to inside centre Eliot Clement who cut the angle and skinned the defence for a try under the posts, the extras added by Jamie Thomas. Gower kept the pressure on causing Pontardulais to spill the ball under pressure,a quick turn over and ball out wide to winger Jack Hooper-Lewis gave him a 50m run down the touch line for another try.
Pontardulais made a clean break of their own getting themselves on the score sheet.
The remainder of the game was very similar with South Gower dominating but the referee was restrictive in allowing the game to flow preventing the All Blacks pressure adding any further points to the score board.
Not a great viewing spectacle, some hints of quality rugby but not sustained through the whole game through no fault of their own. Well done boys.

Another tough outing for the All Black under 12's, playing Morriston in their own back yard, an undefeated side for many years with some very talented players who do not concede many tries. South Gowers revised line up was certainly up for the challenge, a side that is still building momentum and growing in confidence literally by sticking to the basics.

Morriston started well with a break down the wing. South Gower's laspe in concentration for their defensive line cost them with Morriston converting the try from under the posts to give them an early 7 point lead. The Gower boys dusted themselves down and came back with avengeance, challenging every breakdown with a purpose, building through the phases whilst living in Morriston's faces to force the errors, and the errors did come. Camped on the Morriston try line, they were fiercely defending but with good awareness of space Jacob Clement secured the ball and the five points. Scrum half Jamie Thomas added the extras with an awesome kick 5m in from the touch line.

The game unfolded with great determination from both sides. The Gower forwards wiping out with particularly good play from flankers Rob Mogridge and Sam Pritchard, securing good clean ball for scrum half Jamie Thomas who set the backs running. South Gower winger Jonno Blakemore had the ball out wide for a number of blistering runs, but the Morriston defence performed well preventing any Gower points from the wing. A last attack from Morriston just before half time clinched them another try however making the half time score Morriston 12, South Gower 7.

The second half was another well fought affair with end to end rugby. The tackles were being made, the big carries were gaining yards and South Gower really looked capable of securing another try, but it wasn't to be today. On the last play, Morriston made a blind side run hovering on the touch line (many say crossing the touch line) to give Morriston the victory on the day. Morriston RFC 17, South Gower 7

South Gower certainly had another solid character building performance. The team spirit, the togetherness and pride is growing week on week and long may it continue. Well done boys you did yourselves proud.

South Gower under 12's turned up with a stride in their step following a great performance in their outing last week. A full squad to pick from and a first XV capable of stretching any side with a strong bench in tow.
It's South Gowers and Vadre's 1st meet of the season due to postponed games and therefore all to play for. South Gower kicked off and applied relentless pressure that Vadre couldn't handle, with the All Blacks delivering six consecutive un-answered tryies early on. Chay Smith crossed for three, Jacob Clement, Sam Pritchard and Dylan Morgan all gaining well deserved 5 pointers. The forwards played their part too, with the hard yards gained by Micah Pugh and Gavin Shearer. Vadre really struggled in the battle upfront and the precision passing and pace of the backs.
The second half saw a tighter affair, but no real change in dominance. South Gower continued where they left off, ready to put a lid on their challenge with winger Jack Rosser and Chay Smith finishing Vadre off with two further tries in the second half.

The Gower boys delivered a good all round performance with good support play, passing out of the contact area, strong tackling in defence and wiping out in the rucks. Well done boys, keep up the work rate, see you at training.

South Gowers last outing in the Ospreys Cup after an unsuccessful campaign against an unbeaten Abercrave RFC. The Gower team managed to field a bare 15 players due to a high number of injuries within the squad, with 3 players making their All Blacks debut being Gavin Shearer, Eliot & Jacob Clement. The squad also included under 11's winger Harri Hooper-Lewis to complete the match day squad.
A glorious February day for rugby, where both sides came out committed to the cause. South Gower went straight on the attack running some good angles amongst some safe hands.
Abercrave however who were mutually as strong in attack claimed the first 5 pointer added with a successful conversion.
South Gower's confidence remained high with the forwards doing really well at the break down with outstanding hard work being demonstrated by Captain Sam Pritchard on the flank and Gavin Shearer, Alex Ashburner really driving the forwards on in attack. Gower hooker Eliot Owen who also had strong game, broke through many tackles, one resulting in a try line dash, but was tackled a yard short. Chay Smith was quick in support, regathered and produced quick ball to Jack Hooper-Lewis to send him in the corner for a try.

The second half, delivered more of the same, with the rucking of both sides performed quickly and effectively. Abercrave however developed a back line move giving them an overlap and the nail in the coffin with the final try of the game. The final score 5, 12 to Abercrave, was a true reflection on the close and very passionate game. A promising performance from the All Blacks with which we can build on as a squad and develop further.

Man of the Match goes to debutante Gavin Shearer who was feerless ball in hand, with no lost possession and a high work rate.

Under 13s Osprey Cup Win 31 points to 5 !

The Under 13s produced an impressive win today against Ystradgynlais, Tom Gwyn scoring three tries, Luke Evans and James Wild also scoring. Dan Renowden won at least six scrums against the head aswell as not lossing any for South Gower, Will and Jake Keogh put in a relentless tally of tackles, Edward Blackaly put in a fantastic set of tackles which proved that patience in learning earns its rewards. Ystradgynlais had some very large players who could easily hand off South Gower (when we didn't tackle properly !). Kicking today was difficult in a very strong wind however Charlie and Jake completed the conversions missing only one, touch kicks from Jake and Charlie showed that the new kicking rules are being well adapted to. The front row were awsome in controlling the scrums Dylan, Dan, Josh and Rees. Dan Gibbon gave his usual standard or rugby not letting anyone take the ball of him and creating countless turnovers. Ryan supported all the backs superbly and had some excellent off-loads and Jack Sheppard who after leaving the field with a hand injury was able to return to the game to replace Taylor who became injured after a massive tackle on a player twice his size.

Well done boys another win and great improvement !

South Gower Under 9's Match Reports

I have been a bit slack due to no time but here are the last 5 match reports for the Under 9's.

Tries Scored : Tom Jenkins (2), Tom Mogridge (3), Ethan Smith, Jack Bates, Ben Westerholm, George Grammenos, Dylan John.

What a performance !!!!!!!!

Harry Brown captained the team on this very wet and windy day. South Gower controlled the game from start to finish with some excellent tackling and cleaning up around the contact area. Our very own speedster Tom Jenkins opened the scoring with a great run around the opposition to score a good try. This was followed by the impressive Tom Mogridge. Tom has the knack of entering a maul and leaving unnoticed with the ball and before anyone knows what has happened, he is 30 yards up the pitch scoring a try.

Tom's second try was from a good passage of play, clearing out in the rucks and getting the ball to Tom, who raced clear of the opposition with a final sidestep around Bonymaen's last player to score a great try.

Next up was South Gower's Shane Williams.......Ethan Smith. Good hands from South Gower put Ethan into space. Ethan applied his speed and his sidesteps and raced clear for a fantastic try.

Just before half time, Moggy was in the maul again and ripped the ball free before spinning around and racing clear for a try to make it 5 - 0 to South Gower at half time.

We had 15 players today, so we made 5 changes at half time. We turned Possession over straight away and Moggy ripped the ball free from a maul (again) and fed Jack Bates who raced for the corner. He dived for the line and just made the score for a well worked try.

Next up was Ben Westerholm. The roadrunner received the ball 5 metres from his own try line and dashed down the touchline, before sidestepping back in to the open to race clear for a great try.

Tom Jenkins hadn't scored for 5 minutes so he decided it was his turn for another. The ball was played through the hands to Tom who sprinted down the touchline before a neat sidestep took him past the last defender to score his second of the game. Again, we turned possession over with some great tackling and rucking. We were held on Bonymaen's line with some good mauling when the ball came to Max Collis. Max, unselfishly passes to George Grammenos who waltzed over the line unopposed for a good team try.

Bonymaen replied with a try of their own whilst our defence fell asleep and scored in the corner.
South Gower had to have the last say and this time the ball was fed out to Dylan John who charged his way through one tackle before neatly sidestepping the last defender to score a great try.

This was by far our best performance of the season and the rucking and tackling has vastly improved. The team should be proud of themselves as we controlled the game completely and shut Bonymaen out of the game.

Dylan Griffiths captained the Gower against his old club and led from the front.

We had 18 players and played 9 a side, so we had 2 completely different teams for each half.

South Gower opened the scoring with our very own Shane Williams...Ethan Smith. Ethan received the ball on the wing after some great hands from Gower and raced clear for the first

try.

Next up was Gowers' version of New Zealand's Richie McCaw !....Tom Mogridge. Tom ripped the ball form a maul and sidestepped his way into space before racing clear to score a good try.

Penclawdd replied with a good try. They had 2 massive players who we didn't want to tackle ! They split open our defensive line before offloading to make it 2 - 1.

Gower replied again with Moggy ! Tom received the ball and jinked his way through Penclawdd to score a wonderful try. Again, we turned over the opposition and moved the ball to Moggy. This time Moggy used his raw pace to slice the opposition open and race clear for his 3rd of the game. Penclawdd restarted and some good tackling set up a maul.

Enter Richie McCaw. Tom went in and came out with the ball before disappearing towards the try line to score his fourth of the match. Just before half time, penclawdd responded with a good try. One of their bigger players rampaged straight through us and our lack of tackling invited their player to make it 5 - 2 at half time.

We changed the team completely at half time and a new set of 9 players entered the fray.

I don't know why, but the sight of these big boys from Penclawdd made weary of tackling and they opened the scoring.

We replied in style with Tom Jenkins racing around the complete Penclawdd team to score a great try in the corner. Again, no tackling cost us as penclawdd scored 3 unanswered tries before Tom Jenkins raced clear for the winner. Luckily before the ref blew for full time, Penclawdd looked in for a try to equalise but Tom Jenkins got back and made a match saving tackle and the game ended 7 - 6 to South Gower.

Our attacking was breathtaking at times but our defence left a lot to be desired. This is something we will be concentrating on in training.

Tries Scored - Tom Jenkins (5), Cameron Barker (2), Tom Mogridge.

George Grammenos captained the team against our Scarlets opposition. The game started with a bang, when Bynea kicked off, Tom Jenkins caught the ball and cut the opposition apart with a fantastic try. Bynea replied with a try before Tom Jenkins got his hat-trick before half time with some searing runs making it 3 - 1 at half time.

We started the second half well with Tom Jenkins opening the scoring again. Again, his pace was the key as he raced clear of the opposition to score a very good try.

Cameron Barker was next up after receiving the pass in space, Cam put his head down and scored in the corner. Bynea replied with a good try of their own before Tom Jenkins scored his 5th of the game. Tom Mogridge joined in on the fun and scored one of his trademark, rip the ball and run tries !

All in all, a very good performance from the boys resulted in a convincing win.

Tom Mogridge captained South Gower against our local rivals on a perfect day for rugby.

We started well and applied constant pressure on Fall Bay when the ball was passed through the hands to Jack Bates who charged through 3 players to score a great try.

This was followed by Tom Jenkins who skinned the opposition to score.

Fall Bay never looked like causing us any problems and as soon as they had possession, we were straight up on them forcing a turnover. This time, Ethan Smith received the pass before jinking through Fall bay to score a good try. Again, we turned over possession and the ball was worked to the Roadrunner. Ben Westerholm raced past the opposition and cut back inside to score a blinder and put South Gower up by 4 tries to nil at the break.

The game ended 5 - 0 to South Gower in which was another convincing win Bryan & Jon's all black army !

Jack "Bullet head" Bates captained the Gower on this damp Sunday morning. We had the bare 10 players so needed a committed game from all the team. This game was extremely tight to start with good tackling from both sides. Some silly knock ons and forward passes restricted us from opening the scoring in the first half and when Tom Jenkins raced clear, i thought we would score, but one of Gowertons players raced back to make a great tackle. Unfortunately, there was no support from the all blacks for Tom and we didn't score.

Half time, 0 -0. We talked at half time and i said that our tackling and close contact play was good but when we break the gain line, we are lacking support. The talk seemed to have worked when straight from the kick off Tom Mogridge raced clear for the line. Another great tackle from Gowerton stopped Tom just short but this time our support was there. We rucked Gowerton off the ball and the pass went out to Dan Garry and he raced over in the corner for the first try of the game.

Some great tackling ensured another turnover and this time Tom Mogridge made it all the way for a great try.

Again, we held Gowerton up in the middle of the park and some great mauling from Moggy and the team meant that Tom was able to spin off the back of the maul to race for his second try of the game. In the final moments of the game, some good passing from South Gower released Tom Jenkins who raw speed tore Gowerton apart to score a great try.

It ended 4 -0 to South Gower in a game that started tight, but when we concentrated and started doing the things that we had been working on in training, we pulled away and came out deserved winners.

The day started with a one minute silence in memory of rugby legend Ray Gravell - a great ambassador and character of the game who will be sadly missed.

The first game was against Burry Port and with only 11 players, both sides played 11 a-side. South Gower started well and kept up the pressure however failed to convert it into any points. Burry Port showed some good handling and driving and camped on the South Gower line. We tried to clear with a kick which did not go very far - Burry Port picked up then scored.

I am all in favour of letting the game flow from a ref's perspective, however when teams are so close to the try line, it is only fair that knock-ons are penalised. This did not seem to happen and I had to stop myself asking for the video ref. It was good heads did not drop and the game was still there to be won at half time 7:0.

The second half started well but handling failed to move the ball past the fly half due to the pressure exerted by Burry Port. Handling errors, due to this pressure, caused us to lose the ball and in some cases we ended up throwing the ball anywhere. Burry Port countered and just managed to score a second try and convert.

Harry, playing at scrum half, linked up well with Cameron down the blindside on more than one occasion, however Burry Port covered and gave us very little space to run in. Tom was first to alot of the breakdowns and always kept the ball alive.

In the last seconds we kicked the ball from close to our try line in field to chase only for Burry Port to pick up and with some good hands and a lovely side step from their winger scored. Final score 3 tries to nil.

Based on the statistics we had 63% of the possession but couldn't convert it to points. In summary a good game by two evenly matched sides. Rucking and ball retention was greatly improved from last week. The forwards led by Zac tackled well and the game was ours to win - unfortunately we could not use this possession due to the poor handling. This week we will practice passing,passing and more passing - especially under pressure.

The second game was against Brynamman and was only their second game as a team. Due to their low numbers we played 8 a-side. South Gower started well and kept up the pressure shown in the first game. Tom and Jack both ran good straight lines and Josh Burt finished well in the corner after a fine pass out of the tackle by Tom.

Brynamman had one very strong lad who seemed to be the only one they used to run. We tried to tackle high in some cases and on more than one occassion it took four of our lads to bring him down. Still, Brynamman did not look like scoring at all.

Other try scorers were Jesse, Tom and Harry. The only conversion was a drop kick.

The day started well with new shirts being issued to the players. Many thanks to Schaeffler (UK) Ltd ("INA") for the sponsorship - even though the company also sponsors the Scarlets!

Again we had a good turnout of 17 players and opted to play 3 10 minute thirds. The boys however started apprehensively as this was probably the best team we will play all season. A few missed tackles and 7:0 to Fall Bay. This trend continued for the first ten minutes. It was not until the second third that we started to put together some phases - the best of which finished with Harry scoring in the corner.

Some silly mistakes and another dropped ball over our line gave away an easy try. This has happened in each of the last three games and needs to be eliminated in practice.

The trend continued where we would exert a few minutes of pressure only to be pinned back by some very fast direct running by Fall Bay. Another try by Harry took the score to 5 tries to 2, however in the last 5 minutes, Fall Bay scored another few tries to earn a well deserved victory.

Harrison played his first game for the team and did well at second row - although this was not his preferred position.

Things to work on in practice / coaches comments are:

A position on the rugby pitch has a job associated with it. All forwards should follow the ball around the pitch and be in every ruck if possible - not watching the ball. All backs should run straight then pass and look to create space for the wingers who are usually the fastest in the team. If you are close to your own line - kick (until passing improves). Tackle the shorts with your eyes open and wrap your arms around like a ring of steel - not a gentle shove to the chest.

If we do all this we may beat them next time. Nice shirts though!

We had an amazing 22 players at practice and 18 players turn up for the game this week which was superb. Gowerton had 17 players so due to the large numbers, 3 10 minute thirds were played.

The game started much better than last week with pressure being exerted by South Gower and everyone driving over in the rucks.

This pressure paid off when Harry pushed over a defender, picked up the ball and sprinted to score. Gowerton came back with some strong running by some large boys however our tackling had significantly improved from last week and we stopped their attack. Unfortunately we just ran out of space and Gowerton tied the game at the first interval with a strong drive.

The whole team (with the exception of 2 players) was then switched. Gowerton started the second third very strongly and scored a push over try due to some high tackling. We did not really have much space to run and when we did, we chose not to pass and lost the ball in the tackle. Some sloppy defending led to a third try by Gowerton after we dropped the ball over our own line.

Just before the second whistle, Gowerton broke away and scored their fourth try which took the score to 4 tries to 1.

In the final third, we tried to switch the players to ensure everyone played the same amount of time. Tackling and pressure improved which caused Gowerton to lose the ball near their line and Owen E was on hand to pick up and score. The South Gower coaches made their final substitutions however the ref did not stop play which meant we had 16 players on the pitch at once - interesting. Normality was almost restored and after some good breaks and crunching tackles, the final whistle blew.

A very good game which was again frustrating as it could easily have been won if all 18 players were awake. Final score 20 : 10 - although we drew, lost then won each of the thirds.

Win, lose or draw, the boys still sang at the end of the game : well done !

Again this week we had a great turnout with 13 players. We played 9 a-side as Felinfoel only had 9. We started well with some good passing and running. Tom Jenkins received the ball wide and used his pace to accelerate away to the corner to score his, and South Gowers' first try of the match.

Felinfoel restarted but some excellent tackling from Gower, namely George Grammenos and captain George Heard ensured we turned over the ball. Again the ball was passed wide to our flyer Tom Jenkins who sped over for another good try.

Again, Felinfoel restarted and again the Gower tackles were flying in disrupting their play. We gained a turnover and took the ball in to contact. From the resulting maul, Tom Mogridge peeled off the back unchallenged and raced clear for a try just before half time.

We made substitutions at half time to ensure everybody played. Connor Holt made his debut for the All Blacks and made an immediate impact. He tackled everything that moved ensuring we kept Felinfoel on the backfoot. The 2nd half remained scoreless although we came extremely close on a few occasions.

What was most impressive about our play in this game, but especially the 2nd half was our passing. We have been working on our passing a lot and it really paid of here. There was one occasion when we passed the ball through every set of hands down the line, cut back inside and one of the players even had the cheek to pull off an inside pass to Cameron. I sat back an admired with only thoughts of Fijian rugby coming to mind...Awesome.

This was by far our finest performance of the season, tackling and passing was spot on. Well done everyone. We look forward to our game away to Gowerton on Sunday.

Two very different games to report on this week.
The game against Uplands was a superb performance with everybody putting pressure on the opposition. Once again the running and passing game was very good however tackling could be improved by going for the legs as opposed to the chest.
Tom W was back on fine running form and notched up 4 excellent tries. Harry scored 2 tries and Tom R scored a very good opener on his first game of the season at scrum half. Uplands showed resolve and did not give up and scored 3 well deserved tries.
Joseph, Jesse and Tom all converted well.
An excellent game with teamwork and passing starting to improve.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The game against Felinfoel was a different affair. We turned up with 16 players against their 10 so played 10 a side. In line with the substitute rotational system, we had virtually two teams - 1 for each half which meant it was hard for the boys to get into the game. Felinfoel maintained possession well and scored two breakaway tries from ripping the ball out of the ruck. This was disappointing as it was one area that we did well in against Uplands.

This an example of 5 FF players in the ruck against 2 of ours. This was why we lost possession.

After a good break from Jesse and fine offload, Harry scored a very well finished try using his strength and stretching to ground the ball. Owen E in his own unique style executed a very good conversion.
Some missed high tackles let Felinfoel drive over to score their third. We could have scored another try but the ball just went forward in the tackle. To round it off, Felinfoel scored again from another breakaway and sprint to the line.

It was good to see Josh N back and playing well, as well as Markus on his first game for the club.

In summary this was a frustrating game to watch as we could easily have won if we had tackled low, kept the ball in the rucks and exerted pressure. Something to work on this week in practice.
The boys did not give up and tried hard right to the end which is all any coach can ask for - well done lads for the effort.

U12's 07/10/07 South Gower V Uplands RFC (Home)

South Gower V Swansea Uplands, always a mouth watering prospect, playing against one of our neighbouring clubs. Uplands undefeated last season, Gower Cup wiiners for two successive seasons and haven't conceded a try this season to date.
On kick off, the visitors certainly piled on the pressure, camped in the South Gower 22 with great ball retention, South Gowers focus to mark the man and make the tackles count certainly paid off with valient efforts from Max Adams & Dan Barker.
Gower made it back with some great attacking play by Elliot Owen and Sam Jones but with one South Gower disallowed try to Uplands two, The All Blacks were down 14 nil at half time.
The restart produced more gutsy rugby, backed up by good ball handling by both teams, but South Gower's Chay Smith had the early second half glory, to deliver a Gower 5 pointer and spoiling Uplands clean sheet. The Uplands forwards were powerful with ball in hand, that Gower couldn't keep out, with Uplands scoring a further 3 tries, ending the game 5, 31 to Uplands. South Gower man of the match was Jack Rosser who played admirably with good running lines and committed tackles.

Not the result we wanted, but good building work for the forthcoming Opsreys Cup. South Gower RFC V Birchgrove at home, 14th October.

Under 13s - We are still going and improving

After a couple of troubled weeks when Phil and Myself told the team that enough was enough and we could not carry on with a bare 10 players turning up each week, we are back.

Thanks to the comeradery and pure determination we played Waun today and had 19 players ready to play plus 2 regular players who couldn't play ! Phil and myself now need to go on a coaching course to learn what to do when we have substitutes.

An excellent game from the start with James Wild scoring from a 50 metre run down the side of the pitch, guts and willingless produced two more tires scored by Tom Gwyn (Gwynny) down the right wing after coming on at half time. Waun played welll but could only manage one try to our three and all three of our conversions were kicked. Final Score Wanarlydd 5 South Gower 21.

Keep it up boys, training starts at 6pm Tuesday and we have Swansea Uplands at home next Sunday in the cup.

U12's 30/09/07 South Gower V Mumbles RFC (Home)

The local derby, where most of the players from both teams know one another and looked determined to play a great game of rugby, looking for a win to earn the bragging rights in school the following day. South Gower took the lead after a hell for leather start where some great ball handling through the back line sent Gower winger Kieran Shreves in at the corner for a classing try, the timing of the passing and the drawing of the man from Jack Hooper-Lewis gave Gower an early confidence boost.
Mumbles, new they had more in them and enjoyed a passage of play dominating up-front, retaining possesion through the rucks building the phases and pressure which earnt Mumbles their first 5 pointer plus the conversion. The restart saw much the same, South Gower were pushed off the ball in the rucks and with further phase play Mumbles scored another try just before half time.
At 5 - 12 to Mumbles, the South Gower boys had some ground to make up, the aggression levels lifted allowing Chay Smith who spotted a gap to tram line the touch line and a successfull hand off to make a 35m run for an under the posts try.
Both sides at this point were capable of clinching the game, the Mumbles pack verses the slick hands and pace of the Gower backs, but Mumbles again had the upper hand claiming another try that was successfully converted. At 10 - 19 to Mumbles and 10 minutes to go, Gower forwards went on the rampage, Rob Mogridge, Lewis Clarke, Eliot Owen driving forward making the hard yards with No.8 Sam Jones almost making it to the white line but with a final off load to Jonno Blakemore who gained another try for the Gower boys.
At 15 - 19 to Mumbles, the clock was ticking down to the final whistle. The All Blacks were chasing a final attack, but on this day it wasn't to be. Two distinct styles of play, backs verses forwards, matched on try count, but Mumbles being able to add the extras, gave them the win. However, it really was great entertaining rugby for all the supporters to see. Unlucky boys...

1st XV - Aberavan Naval v South Gower 22nd Sept 07

Saturday produced the mighty Gower’s first win 43-0
away to Aberavon Naval, our first in the WRU plus the extras for
scouring more than four tries and we are now sitting around mid table.

Penlan look to be the strong leaders however, second in the league
Llangadog only have 9 points (3 more than us) so the league is wide open
and a few more good results and we will be up the top end of the table.

The good stuff first, 7 tries and once we started to put a few points
on them in the second half we didn’t stop, linking between the
forwards and backs well in some nice play.

I thought the forwards in general played well Gouge carried the ball
and cleared out well around the fringes. Nice to see Tom Wills back, who
had an aggressive game on the back row and scored a couple of tries. The
backs in general played well with some clean breaks and Dill tackled and
dealt with any kicks back.

Their ground set up was a bit strange and we could have easily let that
affect the game, as we spent a lot of time hanging around waiting to get
changed. The first half was a bit scrappy, and at 10-0 at half time we
needed to step up a few gears in the second half, which happened.

Again at times the rucking was a bit soft, but later on that was
probably due to the fact that we lost our shape a little as we got a bit
try hungry and did not go through the phases. Its important to win good
ball and go through some phases in that situation even if it has become
semi opposed to practice for the bigger games to come.

In all well done, a good game, big win, but no rugby next weekend,
boooooo!

U12's 23/09/07 South Gower V Birchgrove RFC (Away)

South Gower under 12's were a depleted of side with only 13 players available, none the less the boys were up for a battle. Birchgrove came straight on the attack controlling the ball in the contact area, keeping possession and going through the phases which delivered Birchgrove the first try of the game and a succesfull conversion.
Gower retaliated against the early try, the forwards attacked with the some aggressive runs made by Lewis Clarke and Max Adams to gain South Gower the territiory, followed by Jamie Thomas getting the ball out wide for expansive use of the back line which sent Jonno Blakemore over for a try.
South Gower recognised the skills which increased their confidence, and similarly fought hard for possession before allowing the secure hands of Jamie Thomas, James Bevan Jones who put Chay Smith in space (again well supported by Jonno Blakemore) leaving the Birchgrove defence indecisive while Chay skinned between two defenders for another well orchestrated try.
At half time and 7 - 10 to South Gower, Birchgrove new they had to up the pace which led to both teams confronting up front. Birchgrove had the edge in the forwards and ground out another battling try, finalising the game 17 - 10 to Birchgrove. The Gower boys ceratinly look class in control at times but lack of concentration and some panic passing under pressure helped Birchgrove to victory.
South Gower Man of the match was Jonathan Blakemore for a great try and supportive play on the wing.
South Gower face Birchgrove again in the Opsreys Cup on Oct.14th at South Gower RFC.
Next Sunday...... Mumbles at home.

Two very good games to start the season. The away game at Waunarlwydd started very well with two excellent break away tries by Sam and Zac. Everyone seemed keen to start the new season and put the Waun team under pressure whenever they had the ball. Tackling was good and the passing from set pieces went remarkably smoothly considering this was the first game played with scrums and lineouts.

Waun returned the pressure and earned a well deserved try however it was now time for the fliers to have a run. Harry and Josh B both scored two very good fast running tries and Tom scored in the corner in the last minute with good passing all down the back line.

The home game against Tumble was a different game altogether and was not helped by the kick off being delayed until 12pm.

Some missed tackling and a very good Tumble scrum-half meant the South Gower All Blacks were playing catch up for all of the game. Dan scored an excellent try in the corner and Sam got his hat trick in the last minute after intercepting and sprinting to the line.

Sam, Owen Evans and George all converted with George's excellent conversion under pressure tying the match in the dying seconds. Well done lads - good fight back.

We had 13 players this week to Pontardullais' 9 so we played 9 a side. We welcomed 2 new faces, George Grammenos and Dylan John who trained with us Wednesday and played in this game.
Sporting our new kit sponsored by Lee Mogridge, we started well and there was a massive improvement in our tackling and passing. Players were running hard and getting stuck in. The game was very tight with South Gower enjoying a lot of possesison but unable to break the visitors defence down. Half time 0 -0.

We came out in the 2nd half more determined and pressuring Pontardullais from the off. We controlled the game and used our heads whereby if the opposition was close to the touchline, we would tackle them over it ensuring a turnover ball. Our pressure finally paid off after some good rucking, the ball was passed out to Tom Mogridge who darted over in the corner.
Straight from the restart, we tackled and some good rucking turned over possession. We moved closer to their line, rucking and mauling before Cai Adams raced over in the same corner to make it 2 - 0.

With the last play of the game remaining, again, we turned over possession and Cameron Barker crossed for a great try.
This was a vast improvement on last weeks game and the more games the boys play, the more their confidence and understanding of the game will develop.

U12's 16/09/07 South Gower V Penclawdd RFC (Away)

The first away match for the Gower under 12's. The boys looked ready for a good game of rugby in the warm up. On kick off, Gower went on the attack with good pace with the wind behind them. The forwards being quick to the breakdown forced an early line out leading to a text book catch and drive. After some hard yards being made by Alex Ashburner and co. scrum half Jamie Thomas got the ball out to the back line eventually finding Kieran Shreves who crossed on the far left wing for a classic try by using the overlap, a great start. Penclawdd, tightened their defence and enjoyed some good possession only to be ripped by Gowers Rob Mogridge in a mid-field position who made a line breaking 10m run, got hit to ground realeased, picked up and on for a further 5m and same again, by this time the Gower forwards had caught up to support, driving the team on towards the try line - Rob Mogridge, the creator eventually popped out with another 5 pointer for the All Blacks.

Penclawdd, feeling the pinch, dug deep, made some great tackles gaining themselves territory which led to them gaining their own 5 pointer, backed up with a great conversion from out wide.

At 7 - 10 to South Gower, the boys new they had more in the tank and with 2 minutes to go to half time the backs fired with Chay Smith cutting in side the opposition near the corner flag for a well worked try.

After half time, the confidence was growing within the Gower squad, new signing outside half Sebastian Heimrich had great vision and saw an opportunity as the ball came out of the scrum to go all the way, side stepping through the defence for a solo try, converted by Chay Smith. Penclawdd never gave in, but the backs ball handling skills put Chay Smith into space followed by a dummy pass and swerve to leave him un-touched crossing the line to draw the game to a 7 - 29 South Gower win.
The praise was high from the spectators towards the players who really put on a display of some great ball handling from forwards and backs.
Prop Alex Ashburner however stood out by making the hard yards but with good hands and therefore was named South Gowers Man of the Match.

This was our first game of the season and a difficult introduction to contact rugby. Over the past few years, Waunarlwydd have proved to be very tough opponents. Today was no exception. Unfortunately, what we have been seeing in training was not carried onto the pitch.
We struggled in the tackle area and had no fluidity when trying to move the ball through our hands. Too often we were caught, man and ball, when the ball should have been passed out. Having said that, we are not the welsh national team (We are way better than that shambles !), this was our first contact game and it was good to see where we need to concentrate on rather than just seeing it through rose tinted glasses in training.
When we had the ball in hand, we looked good, we were running well but all too often were caught without support. Some good tackles were put in with a few try saving ones, one especially from Dan Pritchard.

Max Collis scored both tries for The All Blacks with good direct running. Max took the tries very well and showed he enthusiasm looking for the ball. George Heard was constantly in the opposition faces whilst Owen Renowden was a handful in the contact area. Cameron Barker had a few nice runs and Tom Jenkins also. Cai Adams and Dan Garry both had the ball a few times and made good ground. Jack Bates' direct running ensured the opposition had to put in some good tackles. When Ethan Smith and Ben Westerholm had the ball, they looked dangerous, but we need to get the ball out to our 2 flyers quicker to give them the space and time they need to perform.

U12's 9/09/07 South Gower V Gorseinon (Home)

The first game of the season for our under 12's sporting their new kit courtesy of Swansea Sony Centre, Llansamlet. The boys certainly looked the part and were confident in mood but the time had come to see if they could perform full pitch, 15 a side.

South Gower went on the attack in the early moments of the game, the forwards scavanged well and produced an early dominant forward display which allowed Max Adams to break through the pack to claim his and the teams well deserved first try of the season.

The Gower backs had seen very little ball but that soon changed when the boys started running some great lines produced wide ball allowing the boys to attack the corner flags at pace with good ball / hand skills which delivered Gowers second try via Chay Smith.

10 nil to the Gower All Blacks at half time, but Gorseinon produced some good forward play of their own in the second half backed up with a high possession count that gained them their own 5 pointer.

Senior XV starts new season

Well the grass is cut, the pitch is ready and the fixtures are in. Another new season starts down the Gower for the senior XV. Coming off the back of a season filled with ups (winning the league) and downs ( presidents cup, ref anyone? and losing to Narbeth in the playoffs).

All that is done and dusted now and we start the new season in a new league (W.R.U division 6 for those that don't already know) and with a new captain.

According to Steve the count of players lost since last season is 13 this includes some very influential members of the team : Boner, Pete Manion, graham and Taff.This means it is now more important than ever that we get players down at training Tuesday and Thursday 6:45 for a 7:00 start (several boys seem to have forgotten when training is).

Also Gareth and I will be spearheading a recruitment drive with all aid from able bodied players appreciated. We have decided to start this off with a poster campaign advertising the benefits of the club email me at joinsouthgower@hotmail.co.uk for a pdf file. Please download print and put up wherever you think there may be budding rugby players of south gowers caliber.

South Gower Summer Camp Out - 7th July 2007

After 3 weeks of solid rain, the clouds parted and gave us a day of sun and a night of clear skies for the camp out. I am sure everyone who attended would agree that is was a great day/night. Having played football and rounders on mass, everyone took part in a well deserved drink whilst the youngsters ran riot ! I am sure a few people will feel rough for a few days, it may either be the beer or more likely the bacon in the morning................cheers Nige.

South Gower U'11 Centres

South Gower U'11 centre pairing Chay Smith and Sam Pritchard received the highest accolade possible by representing West Wales under 11's in a select 15 a-side match against East Wales. The pair who also represented Swansea Schoolboys this season through to the DC Thomas Cup final, played at the Millennium Stadium against Cardiff Schoolboys were selected to attend trials held across all the West Wales counties for the opportunity to be selected for the West Wales squad.

South Gower RFC are proud that Sam & Chay have excelled at this level of age grade rugby, the boys have done themselves, their families, their schools and our club proud. Well done!!

The Under 12s team may have left it to the last game of the season but they pulled off a fantastic win over North Gower (Penclawwd).

The games against Uplands and Mumbles saw some fantastic improvement from matches earlier in the season. The team has improved game by game and they saved their best performance till last with a convincing win 4 tries to nil.

Many thanks to all the boys who have played and trained with us this season, the effort you have put in and the reluctance to give up was proved how strong you are.

We will see you all for the presentation night at the club on the 17th of May.

On behalf of everyone who travelled with South Gower, I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Ian Smith, Bryan Heard and Andy Thorburn for arranging the trip. Although the result did not go our way everybody had a fantastic day.

Game Analysis:

Tomasso Morgan captained the Gower against Loughor on a very heavy pitch. Tomasso won the toss and elected to start with possession. From the off, we realised we were up against a good team as their defense was hard to break down. Supporting the runner was the key factor and when Jack "Bullethead" Bates had a run and was tagged, Tom Jenkins was on hand, taking the ball at speed to score a good try.
Loughor replied with a good try. South gower then started to progress up the field before going into touch and conceding a turnover. When Loughor attacked, they dropped the ball and Jack Bates dived on the ball to secure possession whilst popping the ball up in one movement to the supporting Kneathmeister Fergus who raced over unopposed for an excellently worked try.
Loughor came on the offensive but some great defense, gaining the 6 tags, ensured a turnover. Unfortunately, we could not capitalise and ran into touch. Loughor took advantage and scored a try that took us into the break at 3 -3.

Loughor restarted the second half but South Gower's sturdy defense resulted in 6 tags and a turnover. From the off, Tom Mogridge went on a mazy, mazy, mazy run that left everyone's heads spinning. He was eventually tagged before Ethan Smith supported him and raced away to score a great try.

Loughor replied with a try before The Kneathmeister Fergus had a great run. He evaded Loughor's last defender but thought he was tagged. Luckily Ethan Smith was on hand to collect the pass and race over unopposed to score his second and South Gower's 5th try of the game.

Loughor came at us in the dying minutes of the game, but again, great defense ensured that Loughor could not break us down to equalise as we edged them into touch, when the referee blew for the final whistle.
A good performance from us this week against good opposition. It was nice to see the training we do on a Wednesday is becoming more evident in our performances on a Sunday. The way Jack reacted when Loughor spilled the ball, diving straight on it, and how he popped it up straight away to the supporting Fergus was textbook rugby and a joy to watch. A big well done to all.

Elders Game Analysis:

Dan Garry captained South Gower in this fiercely contested derby. The game was played on a damp morning on a very wet pitch. South Gower started well with a try by Tom Jenkins. Uplands replied before Max Collis finished off a good try after providing good support to Cameron Barker. Uplands replied again before Tom Jenkins claimed his second try of the game after putting is head down and backing his pace to go for the corner to score taking us into the break 3 - 2 up.
Uplands started the second half with possession and scored a good try. We immediately replied with Ethan Smith scoring a great try after supporting Dan Garry.

Leading 4 - 3 South Gower showed great defense to claim 6 tags and turn over possession. We created some great play that saw Ethan Smith go over for his second try of the game. Uplands replied, but with a few minutes left, 1 try to the good and with possession, we were confident to hold out for the win. When we restarted, one of our player accidentally bumped into another of our players which resulted in the referee declaring a turnover of possession to Uplands for "Accidental Offside". I tried explaining to the referee that at this age, we don't play accidental offside but he was adamant and he awarded a turnover of possession. This enabled Uplands to score an equalising try and make it 5 - 5.

Unfortunately, we then had possession and got ushered into touch and Uplands took full advantage to score and take the lead at 6 -5. The referee claimed there was 2 minutes left when we restarted. Ben Westerholm took possession and ran straight through the Uplands players showing blistering pace to score an equalising try. Uplands restarted and nearly scored but their player went into touch almost immediately. We then lined up realising that this would be the last play and if we scored we would have won 7 - 6, but the referee decided that was full time.

The hardest thing was trying to explain to the children why possession was turned over to the other team when they didn't understand why. (accidental offside). All in all, a great performance from South Gower matched by some good rugby by the Uplands.

We started with possession with Ben "The Roadrunner" Westerholm having a run. He proceeded to tear the opposition up with some great running and a fine try. It was tit for tat, try for try throughout the game. Uplands replied, Gower then scored through Tom Jenkins. Uplands replied and Ben Westerholm scored another good try. Uplands replied once more and Ben replied once more.

Into the break Gower led 4 - 3. Uplands started the second half with possession and scored a try. This time, Morgan Israel showed great support and a winding run to score a good try. Upland scored and Ben took the stage again with a great try. Time was running out when we nearly turned over possession getting to 5 tags before Uplands broke through and scored. Again, guess who replied ! Yes that roadrunner Westerholm produced a great bit of play to cap off a fine individual performance to score his 5th try of ther game.

Unfortunately, Uplands replied and the referee blew straight away for full time ending in a 7 - 7 draw. A great performance from our team. If we could improve our tagging and force some turnovers then our attacking ability will certainly guide us through to some comprehensive wins. Well done to all.

Game Analysis.

Ethan Smith captained South Gower in this well earned win. South Gower had 11 players turn up, so substitutions and squad rotation was inevitable.
Ethan won the toss end elected to start with possession. Our first play resulted in a try. Ethan started with a run before offloading to Tomasso Morgan. In support came Fergus Kneath who raced away to score a good try.
Glynneath came at us with the ball, but great positional defending resulted in South Gower obtaining 6 tags and the turnover. This time, Tomasso had a run and offloaded to Ethan in the tag before George Heard took over after showing good support to score a good try.

Again, the South Gower defense was well organised and again we got the 6 tags required to get the turnover. Laura Cheley had a dash before getting tagged and passing to Ethan Smith. Ethan himself was tagged and offloaded to Max Collis who claimed an impressive try.

After another turnover, Fergus Kneath looked to have scored his second of the game but it was harshly disallowed with the referee stating that Fergus was in touch. The picture below catches the moment perfectly and i will leave you to decide !

South Gower went into the break 3-0 ahead. For the second half, Glynneath reclaimed one of their players who stepped up to their Under 9's match to help out. So now we played 9 a side. Their returning player made a huge difference claiming all 3 tries for Glynneath in the second half. The half started with a try for glynneath but South Gower replied instantly. Jack Bates had a jinking run before being tagged. Max Collis showed great support and took the pass and raced clear for his second try of the game.

Glynneath replied with a try before they got our 6 tags for a turnover in possession. This time though they spilled the ball forward and Ben "The Roadrunner" Westerholm pounced on it. Ben then went on a fantastic long run to score a great try. Glynneath again replied with a try but the final whistle sounded with South Gower winning 5 - 3.
Another excellent performance from everybody with great defense and even better support in attack. Well done.

U8's : Fall Bay Away 28.01.07

Elders Game Summary :

Due to evenly split numbers attending, we were able to field and elders team consisting completely of children from Year 3 in school. (With the exception of Ben Westerholm, who came on as a Blood/Strop sub). South Gower were captained by Cameron Barker.
Tom Jenkins got of the mark first for South Gower with a blistering run after receiving a good pass. Tom has the ability to be in the right place at the right time, and with his pace, he is always dangerous on the field. Some great defense by South Gower ensured a turn over after Fall Bay had exhausted their 6 tags.
Captain Cameron Barker was next up to finish off some great teamwork to go over for the All Blacks. Fall Bay replied with a good try before Cai Adams clinched a try just before half time. We had a tap 5 metres out and Cai received the ball and went blind. The opposition thought he was going open and he went over in the corner. Half time - South Gower 3, Fall Bay 1.
Fall bay scored straight away in the second half before Tom Jenkins scored another good try. Then our young replacement Ben Westerholm (on for the studded in the head Jack Bates) took centre stage as he raced away up the blind side untouched. As soon as he made the break, no-one was going to touch the Roadrunner.
Fall Bay replied before Tom Jenkins claimed his hat trick with a fine try after showing great support. Fall Bay scored one more before Tom "Twinkle Toes" Mogridge went on a mazy run consisting of 22 sidesteps and 42 dummies before scoring a wonderful try.
This was a great performance for the Gower with all the hard work in training showing on the pitch with some Great defense and support running.
One thing that must be mentioned is that we had 3 tries disallowed for diving over the line. We are not allowed to do this and the sooner we learn this then the sooner we will really start racking up the scores.

Youngsters Game Summary.

South Gower were captained by Laura Cheley.
Fall Bay started brightly with 2 good tries before Fergus kneath scored a very good try. Fall bay replied immediately but Fergus Kneath again produced a great try. This came from great support running. Fergus ran in support of the player before receiving the pass and striding away for his second of the game. Half time and we were 3-2 down.
South Gower came out blazing in the second half with Tomasso Morgan scoring a well taken try. Fall Bay replied before Bruno Morris scored to take the game by the scruff of the neck to bring South Gower level.
Again, Fall Bay replied before The Roadrunner got in on the act. Ben Westerholm (blessed with the speed of an angry cheetah) had a searing run to score a great try.
With the clock running down, Fall bay scored. Dan Pritchard then score a great team try which looked to have drawn the game for South Gower but unfortunately, Fall Bay scored the winner with the last play of the game.
For the second week running, i have been asked to write a special mention about The Kneathmesiter Fergus for his great teamwork and support running. Bryan mentioned that the whole team showed great support and that Cameron Wishart had a good game for his first one. Overall, very pleasing for a team that shows so much promise for the future. A big well done to all.
Also a special mention of thanks to Rob Jenkins and Anthony Barker and everyone else who has helped organise and take training and the matches for the past few weeks due to Bryan's and my absence.

We had 17 children attend ranging from 6 years old to 8 years old. As Penclawdd had one team we mixed and matched the team so everyone would have a game.
In the first half, we played 8 a side and were captained by Bruno Morris. We won the first half by 3 tries to 2. Tries were score by Tom "The Rocket" Jenkins, Jack "Bullet Head" Bates and Ben "The Roadrunner" Westerholm.

The second half we played 9 a side so everyone had a game and were captained by Cai Adams.
Tries were scored by Max Collis, Cai Adams, Fergus Kneath (2), Cameron Barker and James Shreeves. South Gower won the second half by 6 tries to 5.
On the whole an excellent match, great running, tagging and support. A number of our tries came from quick delivery after we had been tagged and it seemed to taken Penclawdd by surprise. The Kneathmeister Fergus deserves a special mention as his support running was outstanding which in turn created some excellent tries.

Elders Game Summary :

Tom Mogridge captained the Gower against our nearest rivals in which turned out to be the worst day of the season (weather wise) we have played rugby on. The wind and the rain lashed down constantly but all the players were brave enough to see the game through. Mumbles scored the first try of the game only for Ethan "Shane" Smith to reply instantly with a weaving run which took apart the opposition. Ethan took them one way, then the other, back the same way and then danced his way through to score a great try. Mumbles replied and then Cameron Barker got his first of the game with a great run which saw him sprint for the corner to go over to level the scores.

After the break, Mumbles scored before Cameron Barker got his second of the game. Some good team play and support saw Cameron go over to level the scores. Mumbles then turned over possession with a knock on and the teamwork sent Ben Westerholm racing away to score in the corner.
The referee then signalled the last play of the game and mumbles came at us. We took 3 tags off them before their player ran through 4 off us to score and level the game at 4 - 4. Unfortunately, with the last play of the game, Ben Westerholm had to go off with a nasty cut lip, luckily, his dad knows a bit about that !!!!!!! A big well done to all, who produced some great rugby in awful conditions.

Youngsters Game Summary :

Dan Pritchard had the honour of captaining his side as the conditions deteriorated. Mumbles started with possession and South Gower made a few tags before they scored the first try of the game. Gower replied with some good running and off loading in the tackle to Fergus Kneath to race over for his first of the game. Again, Mumbles came straight back at us and scored a good try. The Kneathmeister Fergus then took the game to mumbles with some great running to equalise the game at 2-2.
With the wind blowing heavily behind Mumbles, we conceded another try which came from good support running. Half time was approaching when we took the ball up the blind side where we were unfortunately forced into touch. The referee blew for half time, yet it was decided for the match to be abandoned due to the coldness, wetness and the diminishing numbers of player left on the field. The score was 3-2 to Mumbles when the game was abandoned but with the strong wind behind the Gower in the second half, it would not have been long before that score was changed. Well done to all the player who persevered through the awful weather.

S.G.R.F.C. Man of the Match (And Why): Chay Smith for an all round outstanding performance and finishing off 4 well achieved tries.

Game Analysis: A true winters morning; cold, wet, windy and thirty boys that are school mates, neighbours and friends representing two distinct local teams. The ribbing and teasing was over, and time to see who was going to deliver a winning performance on the day. South Gower won the toss and commenced with the wind behind them. Going straight on the attack, South Gower held Mumbles within their own 22, the forwards working well upfront securing possession to allow quick ball out from scrum half Jamie Thomas where the precision passing of the Gower backs reached outside centre Chay Smith to claim the first try of the game. The conversion was literally just inside the touch line resulting in a challenging conversion from Jamie Thomas, it must be said that the angle, length and accuracy was superb and hence added the extra 2 points with a class kick. The All Black team spirit drove on at the restart, straight back into the Mumbles 22. Mumbles defending well with well drilled tackles but Gower holding on to possession, using the backs to create an over lap, that sent Chay Smith over for his second try within 10 minutes. The passion was flowing but Mumbles were no way bowing out. Not long after, Chay Smith having a stormer of a game got popped the ball within the Mumbles half, jinking his way through along with throwing a dummy pass to claim his hat-trick, Jamie Thomas converting the extras. Mumbles, kept their heads and regained possession, taking the game back up field to South Gower. The ball got spilled however allowing the All Blacks to kick clear downfield backed by a strong wind. The chase was on, speedster Jonno Blakemore took out the Mumbles full back at first touch, where Mumbles were certainly under pressure on their own try line; with an adjacent pass along their line which was read and intercepted by Chay Smith touching down for his fourth try, Jamie Thomas again on form with the boot claiming the conversion.
The second half, Gower hoped they had done enough to pin Mumbles down supported by the wind and rain, but they certainly did come back into the game. The Mumbles forwards started to dominate in the rucks and mauls restricting Gower possession. Their determination was never doubted and was evident in their two second half un-answered tries, both being well converted to give them their 14 point score, but unfortunately for them too little too late.
The win was certainly a sweet one for the All Blacks, a bunch of boys working well as a team playing 15 a side on a full size pitch, but fair to say that both teams respected one another well in the true spirit of the sport. A great performance by both sides, so until the next time……. ;-)

We had 2 teams visit South Gower this week which enabled us to play all of our players.
Cameron Barker captained South Gower this week. We were up against 2 strong teams and had to try and split our teams evenly as we have have players ranging from 5 to 8 years old. The important thing was that everybody played.

Game Summary - South Gower V Pontardulais

First up was Pontardulais, they went 2 tries up straight away. South Gower replied with a good weaving run and touchdown from Jack "Bullet Head" Bates. Pontardulais replied with 2 more tries before South Gower's "Roadrunner" Ben Westerholm used his pace to sprint clear of everyone to score a good try.

Ethan Smith then joined in the fun with one of his trademark jinking runs that left everyone dizzy before touching down to make it 4 - 3 to Pontardulais. After the break, Pontardulais scored again before Tom Jenkins skinned the opposition with his pace to score a great try in the corner.

Unfortunately, due to our eagerness to tag early and win a turnover, our players drifted in from the wing to try and tag the opposition leaving space outside for Pontardulais to score their 6th try. There was no time for a comeback this time and Pontardulais ran out winners.

Game Summary - South Gower V Waunarlwydd

Waunarlwydd were up next with a very strong team. We had a complete change of personnel to ensure everyone played. Unfortunately, we were still asleep when the game started and went 3 tries down. Then up stepped Max Collis. Max scored a fabulous individual try to take us into the break at 3 - 1 down. We made a few substitutions at half time and came out of the starting blocks firing on all cylinders. Tom Mogridge weaved his way past several defenders before scoring a good try.

Then Captain Cameron Barker chipped in with a fine try of his own after some good offloading in the tag. Waunarlwydd then struck back with 2 tries. Max Collis then supported his teammates well before racing away through the middle of the opposition to score another great try. Waunarlwydd made it 6 - 4 with some fine play with a few minutes left. Captain Cameron then finished off a good move by the whole team. The offloading in the tag, and players taking the ball at pace instead of standing still, proved valuable as Cameron went over for his second of the game.

With a minute left, Waunarlwydd knocked on and we had possession. Through a series of tags we made our way towards the Waunarlwydd try line. When Ethan was tagged 2 metres out his pass to an unmarked Cameron agonisingly didn't go to hand, the ball was turned over and the referee blew his final whistle. We had lost 5 - 6 but came so close to the draw. We put up a spirited performance against, barring New Dock Stars, our toughest and most organised side we have played against this season. Compliments must be paid to Pontardulais and Waunarlwydd for the way they played.
We seem to have made leaps and bounds in training with our attacking skills, now is the time to concentrate on our defence and bring that up to the same standard. If we can accomplish that then i am certain we will be a very hard team to beat. Well done to everyone.

S.G.R.F.C. Man of the Match (And Why): Jack Hooper-Lewis for constantly getting over the gain line, good tackling and leading by example.

Game Analysis: The match kicked off in far from ideal conditions with a strong wind blowing down the pitch. Waunarlwydd playing with the wind in the first half took full advantage of the conditions and went straight on the attack, their forwards recycled the ball well and it was only some determined Gower tackling that kept them out. However, the pressure that Waunarlwydd were exerting soon took its toll and they went over for the first try of the game. From the kick off Waunarlwydd strung together a good move to put the pressure straight back onto South Gower, however, a good break out of defence by Jack Hooper-Lewis relieved the pressure. Waunarlwydd forwards were becoming more dominant and ‘frustrating’ the Gower players, and it wasn’t long before they scored again. From the reset, Waunarlwydd ran straight through the Gower defence to add a Third try, quickly followed by a fourth. This score seemed to kick start South Gower into life as they stepped up to the mark. They were unlucky, with several good moves of their own, which saw the forwards and backs linking well, come to nothing. The game was now much more competitive and Waunarlwydd knew they were in a match, but against the run of play they broke out to score a fifth unanswered try just before half time.
After the break Sam Pritchard was able to put the pressure on Waunarlwydd from the kick off, but Gower were just unable to cross the whitewash. Both sides were struggling for the upper hand at the breakdown and several good tackles from Max Adams, Kieran Shreeves and Jack Hooper-Lewis kept Waunarlwydd at bay. South Gower were attacking more and more and it was only good defence and aggressive forward play by Waunarlwydd that kept them out, then totally against the run of play Waunarlwydd broke out from their own half to score another try. South Gower, were determined to get something out of the game and showed great resolve to keep their heads up and push for a try of their own. A quick break down the left wing saw Sam Pritchard tackled short of the line, the Gower forwards quick to the breakdown, secured the ball for Jamie Thomas to snipe down the blind side only to be tackled inches short, but determined not to finish without scoring, the ball was popped up to Eliot Owen, who did well to stay in the field of play and drive over for the score, taking at least two players with him. Sam Pritchard added the extra two points, the score ensured South Gower had the last word and the supporters had something to cheer about and the second half ended 7-7. The final score did not reflect how close the match was or the effort the players put in, they were a credit to themselves and South Gower RFC in that they didn’t let their heads drop and pushed until the end to get a well deserved try. Well done boys, lets go to Waunarlwydd and beat them at their ground in March, but lets not give them such a head start next time!!!!!

Game Summary :

Ben Westerholm captained South Gower in this entertaining match. Bonymaen had 9 players and we had 18 so each South Gower player played 1 half each.
From the start, Bonymaen took advantage of some missed tagging from South Gower to score the first try of the game. From the restart, Ethan Smith received the ball and launched an arching run around the entire oppostition team to score in the corner. Bonymaen replied with a good try before Jack Bates scored a great try.

Jack received the ball from the kick off and sped off down the wing. He was then one on one with the last Bonymaen defender when Jack sidestepped inside the player to score.
Next up, The Road runner. Captain Ben Westerholm received the ball after great tagging by South Gower ensured a turnover of possession. Ben took Bonymaen one way and then the other before muttering the words "Beep Beep" and racing away to score a fine try. We went into the break 3-2 up with a complete change of team to follow.

Straight away, Tom Jenkins went on one of his mazy runs to touchdown in the corner. Bonymaen came staright back at us, but when the ball was dropped, Tom Mogridge picked up and weaved his way over the try line for a good score.

Some great tagging by South Gower turned over possession and Laura Cheley had a run before offloading to Tom Mogridge who then claimed his second try of the game. Bonymaen then scored a great try. They dodged our players before finally getting tagged 20 yards out, but the offload to a player taking the ball a pace who raced over the line unopposed.
Tom Jenkins immediately replied with a blistering run up the line to score his second try and when Bonymaen were penalised for a knock on, the turnover resulted in a great jinking run from Cameron Barker, who offloaded in the tackle to Tom Jenkins who scored his 3rd, and South Gower's 8th and final try.

Some very good running passing and tagging ensured South Gower's Under 8's biggest victory of the season. Well done to all.

Worthington Cup, South Gower made light of the wet conditions to march into round four of the Worthington Cup with an impressive 66-0 victory at Aberbeeg in the Gwent Valleys.Lock Roger Gill opened the scoring with the first of his two tries, with four more shared between centre Phil Jones and flanker Ciaran Aldridge. Wings Sam Moore and Rhodri Griffiths added further touchdowns, with replacement lock Pat McLernon also scoring.The last try came from fly-half Simon Jones, who missed the conversion after a faultless kicking performance in difficult conditions when landing all eight previous attempts.

Game Summary:

After some extremely loud thunder and rain the night before, the sunshine and blue sky was a very welcome sight and a good omen for what was to follow. From the kick off, Bonymaen applied pressure that was dealt with very well. Tackling was not bad but, again, two tries were given away due to tackling too high or in some cases not tackling at all. Before the end of the first half, South Gower replied with a fine run by Tom, but again a missed tackle let Bony in for one last try.

The score was 1:3 at half time and emphasis was placed on getting to the ruck quickly and passing the ball out before we were pushed back.

From the kick off, South Gower kicked the ball dead, but Bony decided to run. South Gower put in two hard tackles and with some good driving, Tom scored - 2:3. South Gower continued to apply pressure and started to reap the rewards of training. Three further tries ensued due to quick recycling and some good passing and support. Sam scored a great swerving try, Tom got his hat trick and Joshua Burt finished things off showing good support and a great turn of pace.

After an excellent run from Matthew who drew the defender and just failed to get the pass away, the final whistle blew. South Gower had won their first game of the season 5:3 .

Game Analysis:
South Gower 11’s and Bonymaen agreed to a full pitch 15 a side game. Both teams looked well organised, but Gower took the game straight to Bonymaen and looked set to camp out in their half. The early determination showed when Gower’s Jack Hooper-Lewis broke free from the maul early on for the first try. In the same vein, the Gower forwards maintained the pressure where both Alex Ashburner crashed over the line, with Jamie Thomas adding the extras, hooker Eliot Owen followed carrying the ball from a tap and pass penalty blazing over for 5 points.Just as if that wasn’t enough, this all firing all guns blazing South Gower team hadn’t even got the ball to the backs yet. Winger Jonathan Blakemore kicked that off however sealing another 5 points just before half time; kicked successfully for another 2 points by Sam Pritchard.
In the second half Bonymaen really needed to make their tackles count, but the slick back line running of outside half Jack Rosser and centre Chay Smith kept them at bay both crossing deservedly to add their own successive 5 points to the score board. Bonymaen true to their roots however never gave up and were stronger in the second half, determined to the end claiming their own 7 point combo score, but the damage was already done. Gower’s slick transition between the forwards and backs really looked impressive and won the day - Well done boys.

S.G.R.F.C. Man of the Match (And Why): Thomas Wright, for getting stuck in with ball in hand and committing himself to the rucks and driving mauls.

Game Analysis:
A well matched but forward orientated game. Both teams were up for the battle without any side really dominating. Thomas Wrights driving charges certainly made an impact along with some great support play by Jack Hooper-Lewis. All the pressure however failed to deliver a score, leaving it nil, nil at half time.
In the second half, Gower’s forward were rampaging through the defence, off loading in the contact area, recycling the ball allowing Jack Rosser to come blazing through for the first five pointer, successfully converted by Jamie Thomas. Giving Bynea more of the same, another strong wave of phases from the Gower All Blacks led them into Bynea's 22, allowing an on form Jack Rosser to score another try again slotted over by Jamie to claim another seven points. Some harsh penalties against South Gower allowed Bynea back into the game who also managed two further tries of their own, equalising the score line. A fair result, but with better concentration and determination, Gower could have held onto their lead and claimed an away win. Keep the focus boys, otherwise well played.

U9's Fall Bay Home 19.11.06

Game Summary:
As was to be expected, the game started at a fast pace with Fall Bay putting in some heavy tackles. South Gower tried to go forward but the aggressive rucking by Fall Bay quickly gave them a two try headstart. South Gower replied after 5 minutes with a superb try by Harry in the corner after some good handling. With one more attack and try by Fall Bay, the score after the first 10 minutes was 1:3.
South Gower started the second 10 minutes well with some hard tackles and good pressure but a break away try by Fall Bay put the score at 1:4. From the restart, we were again under pressure but the lads continued to tackle well and tried to spin the ball wide to Harry or Tom whenever possible. We eventually got the ball to Tom who ran superbly to score. This made it 2:4. From the restart, we ran and tackled and drove over forcing Fall Bay to kick. An excellent catch by Evan gave us the advantage but we again lost it after several phases in the ruck. Fall Bay continued to go forward and some missed high tackles by South Gower and strong running made the score 2:6 after the second third.
The final third of the game was very evenly matched. South Gower had gained confidence from the second third and tried to pass to make space whenever possible. Tackling remained at a high standard and the passing continued to improve. The Fall Bay defence remained strong and South Gower tried hard but were unable to break it down. A last try by Fall Bay made the final score 2:7, however the game was more evenly matched than the score represented.
Well done boys - this was by far the best game of the season - especially with regards to tackling, attitude and determination. One point to improve is keeping the ball in the ruck which can be worked on in training. Excellent performance all round!

Elders Game Summary:

Jack Bates captained South Gower in this local derby which was played in very damp conditions. Fall Bay kicked the game off but great South Gower Defence ensured that we turned the ball over. From the turnover, we gained territory and Tom Mogridge raced over for a good try. Fall Bay replied with a fine try but South Gower were straight back at them. Ethan Smith showed great team support when Tom Jenkins was tagged. Ethan ran at pace, took a good pass from Tom and raced clear to score a great team try.
We went into the break 2 - 1 up and started with the ball in the second half. Some good tagging from Fall Bay earned them possession. When Fall Bay spilled the Ball, Harry Brown dived on the ball to secure possession. His pop went to Cameron Barker who raced clear to score a great try. From here, Fall Bay clawed one back but straight from the kick off Tom Mogridge went on a mazy run from the halfway line and scored a fantastic individual try.
With the final whistle coming, Fergus Kneath was passed the ball and made a tiger like dash for the line, he evaded the fall bay taggers to score in the corner. It ended 5 - 2 to South Gower. The greatest compliment to this team was that the Fall Bay coach congratulated us and commented on the way our players offloaded the ball to team mates coming on at pace. This proved the key and set up 3 of our tries. This is part of the game that we have been concentrating on in training and it is extremely satisfying to see it work on a Sunday. Well done everyone !!

Youngsters Game Summary:

Dan Garry captained the youngsters against Fall Bay's youngsters. Fall Bay started the game with possession and played well to score the games first try. South Gower replied and made territory but some good tagging by Fall Bay turned over possession. Fall Bay scored a good try with some great running from the pass. We went into the break 2 - 0 down.
We came out in the second half fired up and Laura Cheley went on a mazy run. Laura went across, backwards, across some more, backwards again before i finally caught up with her and pointed the way forward. Laura then proceeded to tear apart the opposition with her twinkle toe sidesteps before she was tagged. The ball was passed to captain Dan Garry and he raced clear of the opposition to score a great try in the corner.

Fall Bay replied with 2 great tries. Both of them came from good running and good passing. The next try was scored by Morgan Israel. Morgan used his pace and awareness to cut inside and score a good try. We then turned possession over with great tagging but unfortunately, we were penalised for a forward pass which Fall Bay took advantage of and scored.
With the last minute of the game left, Tomasso Morgan had a great run and when tagged passed to Morgan Israel who took the ball at pace and scored a brilliant try in the corner. This was an excellent performance from our Youngsters especially as Fall Bay had to make up the numbers with a few of their elder players. So a big well done to our Youngsters !!!
